GRAD SHOW BIUES Well kids, the word’s out. This year’s Grad Show will be in one of the more prestigeous “spots” British Columbia has to offer its artists: The 5th floor of 21 Water St. in quaint, tasteful, empty, inaccessible Gastown. Last year’s show at Robson Square Media Centre was a fluke. That should be read as a freebe. This year the rent is $300 per day. The school (Dean) will not pay. Now about the Grad Show. It is our Big Debutante Ball — something looked at by the Art Community. I’d even go so far as to say it’s one of the big shows of the year in Vancouver. This school has 500 people working hard at making art, and the Grad Show is a representation of what 4 years produces. It really is some of the most vital art work in the province. Some may be too slick and some too clumsy, but it all has a great deal of energy. This, the most well endowed school per capita in the Province, has no money to rent a space for this show. I couldn’t begin to list the luxuries this place offers over other schools, but is the Grad Show low priority? Is the Grad Show for someone to say they were in it and fine, the ritual happened, or is it for people to see Art? Who goes to the fucking 5th floor Water St. — Mum and Dad and 175 art rats at the opening? Back to money. The 5th floor will be cleaned out and painted up and then after the show it will be vacated (you know — the new school.) Also security monitors will be hired from the student body to sit and guard for 3 weeks. All this will cost Thous- ands. It’s been mumbled at the grass roots that we graduating types will even offer to pay some money. A nice gesture, but we shouldn’t have to. The Grad Show looks like it has become the same farce as graduating from U.B.C. (when I went there). Just as I opted out on the Cap and Gown Dance, I feel I’ve signed no contract to participate in the Grad Show. Under pressure [ll probably put in some minimal effort but are we really expected to get excited over a show on the fifth floor? This is important — it’s what we’ve done with four years of our lives! Come on Tom, fork over some money. Bill Rennie MIKE BANWELL INVITES YOU TO VIEW AN INSTALLATION “3 HILLS BETWEEN 3520 AND 3528 COMMERCIAL, VANCOUVER, B.C.” AS OF OCT. 41/79 AND ON.
