4. Planet of the Arts / March 1997 One Dissatisfied Reader To the Editors, At the general meeting on January 23. 1997, Planet of the Arts co-editor Herald Gravelsins stated that he and Jonathan Lander welcome feedback regarding the newspaper. Here are my comments: | would like to see the editors and their counterparts stop using our student newspaper to fulfill their personal political agendas and find out what the majority of students actually want to read. | am tired of the constant rhetoric and negative tone in the newspa- per and | know | am not alone in this. This is an account of the three personal experiences | have had with the Planet of the Arts. In my first semester at ECIAD, | submitted an anonymous article and was immediately confronted by the editor asking me to put my name on it. He said that it was an impor- tant statement, and that it might not be taken seriously if it was not signed. When the article appeared in the next edition, with my name, it had a trailer attached which made it a joke. In September 1996 there was a notice that went up all over the Institute which discussed the cuts in building hours and solicited student response. | was interviewed and photographed for the Planet of the Arts (COmet), and subse- quently angered to find that I had been misquoted in several parts of my statement. If | am not mistaken, the editor's job is to correct mis- takes in articles, not to rewrite quotes received during interviews. Feeling optimistic and hearing the ceaseless call for submissions, | took a deep breath, decided to write a short, humorous article for the latest edition of the paper. The editor was excited as always and even requested an animation student to do an illustration to accompany the article. Alas the December issue appeared without my article. The editor, when ques- tioned, immediately looked shocked and said he had forgot- ten it. | have an inquiring mind and / want to know how the current editors keep getting this job without any apparent contest from other interested parties. How accountable to us are people who simply assume the role of editor? After all, PoA editors are responsi- ble for thousand of dollars of student funds. This will be the last article | write for the PoA in the foresee- able future. | will no longer read the newspaper and will have as little to do with it as possible. | suggest that if the editors want to play politics and build portfolios that they not do it at the expense of our newspaper which should contain the images and writings from all students, not a select few. CHVATA Barf Clarification (Via E-Mail) From: “Barkley, Alan” To: “Planet of the Arts” Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 16:22:00 Dear Harald, Thanks for a copy of the Planet. Re: your report. on OCAD administration and the Student Union publications. The Student Union magazine had not been removed from the College but relocated from the lobby to the Student Union Lounge. It had been my understanding that, for clarity, all College publications would be available in the entrance lobby and all Student Union publi- cations would be available in the Student Union Lounge. By the way, congratulations on a strong publication. | notice that | seem to be getting so much atten- tion in your current issue, even after all this time away! Let me wish the Planet of the Arts, Ron, the faculty and staff and all the students at ECIAD the very best for 1997. Health Alert Rebuttle Dear Planet of the Arts, |am writing in response to Roch Smith’s article entitled “Community Health Alert”, in which he warns us of the symptoms of a sick adminis- tration. Unfortunately, we have had no shortage of first hand experience in this area. While Roch was astute enough to have accurately recognized Alan Barkley as an absentee President, he did not look beyond the obvious when he accused Ron Burnett unfairly of the same behavior. To even suggest that Ron's lack of presence within the halls of Emily az NOIAW uve yy IVAW YIV Ag Licii La © t recently heard am very interested. like to cbtain a2 sample and qt at ibility of @ I am ready to de My address Larry Todd gi Ee OR —. ss ’ iQ ee ee pee 4 > Q : 63: ee: ose subscription. fray some cost. Carr reflects a similar administra- tive approach or style to that of his predecessors is outrageous. The fact is, if we as an Institute, community, and family, had not been driven into the ground by the ineptitude of the previous adminis- tration(s) (Brad Campbell — master renovator, whole-heartedly includ- ed) we would perhaps be able to see Ron stroll the halls or visit our work areas as suggested by Roch. Instead, our current President must spend his time pursuing new contacts with business and the Ministry in order to position Emily Carr within these communities. This ground work comes with the terri- tory and should have been well established before his arrival. Sadly our past administration(s) felt company time was better spent serving muffins to students, diversi- fying their personal stock portfolio, or reading the Globe and Mail until nap time rolled around. For the first time in years, we have a hard working, intelligent and decent person as President and he’s being accused of ignoring his responsibilities by the very people he's striving to represent. Meanwhile, where are the responsibilities of the students? | wonder what message was sent to the President when 16 students (that's 2% of the full-time student population) “eventually” attended the “All Student Meeting with Ron.” Could it be he was discour- aged by this apathetic display of interest? Perhaps the student body is suffering from its own version of “Barkleyitis!” This letter was submitted by a support staff who requested anonymity in order to avoid losing old friends or making new ones on the basis of this letter. Another Dissatisfied Reader To the Planet of the Arts: RE: “Before You Pay Tribute”, (page 29, Planet of the Arts, December 1996) One of the most contorted pieces of unintelligible bullshit I’ve read for awhile. Presumptuous — assuming - elitist - snobbish name dropping — inaccurate — pinched — inane — tight assed — tight minded. Arrogant BS. “As an educator” “we are all.” Photography has been the most profound force for communi- cation and has a thousand various uses. Fuck off. T. Stenning Seattle, Washington. One Satisfied Reader Ling Chiu, This is just a note of apprecia- tion for your article in Planet of the Arts. You stood up for some truth, stuck your neck out — and | gather it cost you. Just a note to say one of your readers appreciates your 200+ hours of research. Thanks, Johannes Halbertsma (First Year) Another Satisfied Reader Dear Planet of the Arts, | left you a sort of garbled message on your PoA-answering machine. If you weren't able to hear it, I'm writing now to say thank you for your time and effort. You folks beautifully type-set “The Artist”, and the letter excerpt was thoughtfully presented. I'd like to add that the quality of PoA astounds me. And the energy draws me in. When | read it, | feel as if I'm a student at ECIAD. Certainly you must have a noteworthy budget — 44 pages of articles and pictures costs a lot of $. By the way, who's that Ron Burnett guy? He looks as if he needs a good sleep. My favourite item from the December 1996 issue was Nancy Bleck’s “Untitled” (Silver Gelatin Photograph) on page 44. Thanks for giving me a forum for my work.
