And why do | also get the feeling it was chosen by a man? Because it misses the point of the article 100%! What is she doing? Giggling about his penis size or something? | truly doubt that was on this friend's mind at all. There is a place in the paper for frivolity and fun, I'm sure, but | don't think this article is it. | know we're all busy, but please take the time to read your article and consider their points next time before you slap an illustration next [to] them. Or ask the author at least. This gave me the creeps. Thanks for the Falafel coupon though. (unsigned) The image selected by the editors to accompany the text by the author was chosen for the contrast it sets up between an urgent, gender-related incident in need of publicity, and a still insidiously commonplace iconic repre- sentation of a woman. We chose this ironic pairing in order to call attention to the continuing need to deconstruct these regressive icons, and to engage in this deconstruction by the contextualization of a powerful, personal account of harassment against the token of the repression and stereotyping of women. Your response seems to indicate continuing need for this deconstruction. We feel that your disagreement with our choice indicates not so much that there is one way to conduct this work, but that there are many strategies to conduct it, some of which involve the use of distasteful images. -Lulu Conchita Galway, co-Editor Place Pudse PUALL Coe BAtK To ME MY DAKLING— Oro Barton To: Planet of the Arts Wow! Way to go. That was the best issue of POA since Michael Smart was aboard! It sure is nice to read our Institute newspaper and find positive, happy things to talk about and hear what's going on. What a refreshing change from the past. Keep up the great work!! Your team obviously has a positive attitude, works very well together and strives to have the best articles! It really showed. Thank You, Kathleen Johnson, Staff ECIAD [the original copy of this memo has been preserved and will be displayed upon request to any skeptical readers. -Eds.] To the Editor (or Whoever), a This is my first year at ECIAD (don't hold it against me) and I've encoun- tered an attitude here which really bothers me. On several occasions | have heard an instructor say, "When you become an artist..." or "If you want to be an artist..." or variations on that theme. | know several students in first year alone who have worked in their fields, published, won national and interna- tional awards, or have simply produced some outstanding work. Why can't students be recognized as artists and what constitutes an artist? A degree from ECIAD? Yours sincerely, Brian Gallant Yes! A degree from ECIAD means that you can now be an artist. What a lot of people don't realize is that artists world wide form a shadow network of clan- destine cooperation. It's like the Hell's Angels or the Masons. Haven't you ever noticed that the only people who are world leaders are also Masons? And haven't you ever noticed that the only people who are in Art History text books have a degree (or certificate) from ECIAD (or Emily's personal okay)? -Editor PS:! could be killed for saying this but Emily Carr's brain is being kept alive in the Charles H. Scott Gallery, monitored by a secretive group of scientists and art historians.
