To conclude let me read you some notes on poetry now, and for the word poetry substitute the name of film, or whatever your own craft may be. * * * Poetry is an adventure not a literary problem. Poetry is a search for essence, becomes an essence, remains an essential. The poet has to allow everything to happen to him, or he can make nothing happen. The poet has to let go in order to hold on. A poet is in the service of something larger than his personal life, his craft, or his published works. Poetry is an act of love, it asks no rewards. To live poetically is more important than to write good poems. Poetry may be a criticism of life, as Arnold said, but life triumphs over all criticism. Poetry is a quest for liberation. But is must be limit- ed in order to be liberated. A poem is a uniqueness Rick Ross os f : ——— a he SI & 5se —S in 4 Se Rg @ a r é~ == ie - sail WHAT 5s RE mF oODN defined by its limitations. Poetry is always both sense and nonsense: the sense in nonsense, and the nonsense of sense. There is an enormous difference between art and self-expression. Poetry is a confessional, but it is also an altar. It is a vessel of transformation, it is the host and the commu- nion cup. But it is also the fly on the windowpane. Poetry is impersonal about the personal, personal about the non-personal, and personably transpersonal. A poem is, was, and will be. It is of the present only ‘if it is connected to the past and the future. A contem- porary poem needs some fragrance of the ancient, an echo of the primordial, a taste of the everlasting: otherwise it has no parents nor progeny. A poem can be what it always is when it can become what it already was. “‘Attain the inevitable!” Poets are defined by businessmen, as everything is de- fined by its opposite.
