30 planet of the arts / spring 1998 SERENDIPITOUS SPACES Say “Cheeeeese” — You're IT! Course Description Tired of studying art history about artists who are dead? Modernism got you down? Other seminars could be boring -— want to do something that’s guaranteed to be 100% FUN? This is the seminar for you. Need some irreverence? Wondering how art relates to sex, fashion and music? We're going to look at the real cultures of today — music, clothes and sex, sun, surf, snowboards, popular culture TV, and artists who are alive and make money and art for the living. Wondering why Damian Hirst makes rock videos for Blur? And why Robert Longo, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel each just made a movie? This seminar will be a search for alternatives. Alternative ways of making work, and alternative ways of thinking about our art production. We will outline and consider a series of issues that impact on us as artists working today.
