_First Base And Beyond... Wetngs and images coordinated by Tyla Bolte First Year is well represented within our student govern- . ment. The following four students have been voted in to rep- resent.First Year on the Students’ Union Executive Committee: Joe Worley, Erin Gibbs, Emmanuel Ho and Tyla Bolte. All first year students have had a very busy first semester with their Emily Carr courses. Pot. Luck It started with a Pot Luck which had a good turn-out with plenty of yummy stuff to munch on. During this gathering, slides of some of the ‘Map'your week’ projects were shown. The students showed great interest in each others’ work, but were disappointed that not as many pieces were shown as there could have been. Some students also felt there were too many slides taken of one project, for example, when those slides could have been used for other work instead. Cabaret/Pub Night The Halloween Cabaret/Pub Night was a great success and lots of fun. The highlights were the raffles of fabulous prizes, donated by hard-working students; the booths drew people in and raised some money; the photo booth allowed the night to be captured on light-sensitive emulsion forever; per- formances including singing and dancing were given by tal- ented students willing to risk their lives with the faulty stage and sound equipment; the ‘best costume’ contest had great judges, who had prize-worthy outfits themselves: Laurie Milner'’s costume as Kirchner’s red paint brush was fabulous! The Cabaret raised $500 for the First Year Show that will take place and the end of the year. Organizing was much hard work and stress. First years had to find ways to raise funds for the event, encourage the students to get involved, . inform people about the Cabaret, decorate and do a whole lot of planning. But it was a good experience and a great way to meet other First Years. Many thank-you’s goto those who helped out, and you know who you are. Thanks also to John Wertschek and other faculty and staff members for all. - of your help! Photograph-by Jonathan Lander Other concerns Students feel rushed with two seven-week courses instead of semester-long courses for Colour and Creative Processes. Many students showed frustration in regards to how Art History is taught or instructed. Although some do enjoy the course's historical outlook, others feel they are not getting enough out of what is taught and they need more cohesion. Some students appreciate the instructors’ efforts of trying new approaches to the course. Art History is now called Western Art and Design, and includes a lecture and tutorial. Within the tutorials a group project was assigned and some students found the project frustrating. But others found it to be an experience they learned from, about themselves and about others. Looking at the Faculty Some students feel they have been treated like children when they are above the age of 20. They wish for more of an equal ground with some instructors. Others feel “Oh, they rock” (as-one student stated), expressing how supportive some instructors have been and how good an edu- cation they believe they're getting. | feel that _——— the majority of First Year students are proud to be part at Emily Carr and support their program with plenty of school spirit. This first semester went by very — quickly for most of us First Years. We learned a great deal. Some feel they have touched insomnia‘’s warm hand and haven't let go yet, and won't until the holiday starts when it’s time to relax for a little bit. But all in all this first semester has been a ‘fab’ experience, with one student stating “! found my first semester ecclesiastic, pseudo-existential and full of new experiences.” All First Years are looking forward to next semester when we can begin our electives, take new courses and meet a whole new group of people.
