BLAH, BLAH, BLAH: The opinions in this report are all/mostly my own; so if you're going to get pissed off at someone, you know who to come find. First I'd like to get a few things off my chest, if I may: ethe name is STUDENTS’ UNION; not society, not association, and definitely not council. Please, it gets really annoying at times. *every student at E.C.C.A.D. is a member of the Students’ Union, and of the Canadian Federation of Stu- dents (C.F.S.). - ¢the Students’ Union executive are unpaid volunteers doing a full- time course load just like the rest of you. ¢the Students’ Union is a non- profit advocacy and service organisa- tion, to enrich the lives of, promote the interests of, and act as an organ- ising tool for the student body. *that’s why we don’t always have the time to act upon everybody's requests. If you have a valid concern or request, or information we should be aware of; please do contact us. Just be aware that we’re not babysit- ters or servants, and that your indi- vidual problem is not always best taken on by us. Don’t let me discour- age you from taking matters into your own hands, though. Ack...enough of my griping. INTERNAL AFFAIRS On January 16, we received the resignation of our Treasurer; Karen Opas. It was accepted with regrets. No-one was appointed to fill the vacancy, as we are close to spring election time anyway. This is perhaps an undemocratic way to do things, but we’re just too tired to organise a by-election, so there. STUDENTS’ UNION ELECTIONS: On that note; please see the notice of elections announce- ments in this issue, and around the school. I would encourage anybody with a social-activist bone in her/his body to run for a position; it is an incredible and empowering experi- ence and complement to your educa- tion as an artist/hell-raiser, though it cuts into your T.V. time (ooh...god for- bid). I, for one, will be running for a second "term in office”, if that’s any indication. E.C.C.A.D. T-SHIRTS: Yes the shirts are now on sale! Two designs have been completed, and a third is on the way. Choice of colours, too. Cost is ten ollars ($10) each. 100% cotton, good print job, and right spiffy to "boot. Volunteers needed to help sell 'em.. STUDENTS’ UNION BUILDING? After some preliminary research, it seems it may be possible to get a S.U.B. happening here at E.C.C.A.D. This is in no way connected with any initiative of the college administra- tion. It would be a completely inde- ’ Union fee (probably in the range of STUDENTS' UN Canadian Federation Q& $10-12 per semester), though not out of line with S.U.B. fees at other students’ unions. Also, at least for this kind of fee increase, one sees some improvement in services for the extra money. Any proposed fee levy would go to an open student referendum. If you'd like to be part of the planning/research group for this project, just getting started; contact the Students’ Union soon. B.C. TRANSIT FastTrax PROGRAM: Soon the C.F.S. and B.C. Transit will be reviewing the success of this trial program. It allows post-secon- dary students to go any number of zones on a one-zone fare, once they had the validation sticker. This was a one-year trial program, though it appears that both parties were satisfied with it’s success and it may continue. Eventually, we hope to achieve concession fares for post-secondary students, just like elementary/secon- dary students do. More news to come. If you haven’t already got your FastTrax validation sticker (good ‘til the end of the semester) and would like one, come by the Students’ Union office. Cost is $2. STUDENTS’ UNION ALMANAC 1990/91: It is expected that we will be producing another almanac next year, assuming that we can get gov- ernment funding to hire students to put it together. We have entered into a contract with a company to solicit advertising for us, thereby reducing the costs of the project. We will probably soon be thinking about who we're going to hire for the project; so notify us if you’re interested. TUITION FREEZE CAMPAIGN: Many of you have already heard about what has been happening around the province in this cam- paign. We are part of a coordinated effort between the various C.F.S. member campuses. On January 23, five E.C.C.A.D. students took the bus to Victoria to attend a mass rally against tuition hikes. Estimates ranged up to 5000 in attendance, including some repre- sentation from most of the other colleges and universities around B.C. Immediately following that, we raced back to the mainland just in time for the Board of Governors meeting at S.F.U. Despite a very high-profile cam- paign there, as well as wide commu- nity support, and the leaked discov- ery of a huge surplus in the S.F.U. budget; the Board went ahead and increased undergraduate tuition fees. At this point, the students surged forward from their seats in frustra- tion, chanting “freeze our fees”, and shut down the meeting. What followed was a 2-day occupation of the administration building by 55 of the original 200 in attendance. Also, a 1500-strong support march sur- rounding the admin building the next day; a more modest rally at Robson Square the day after, and a meeting with Bruce Strachan; Socred Minister for Advanced Education. Mr. Strachan was negative toward our demand for a Royal Commission on the Funding and Affordability of Post-Secondary Education. He said, though, that he would like to see a “study” of some kind done. We fear that a “study” will only mean more of the same of Bill VanderZalm’s lies about how won- derful our education system is. A royal commission is the only way to ensure an unbiased, public examina- tion of the problem, whose recom- mendations might carry any weight with our dic jal, oops Socred regime. By that, I mean that our current government has been far from responsive to even the most popular of demands (ie; if it doesn't fit the private crusade of Bill V, too bad...) JANUARY 31, E.C.C.A.D. BOARD MEETING: Here at home, the decision on tuition fees has not yet been made, though we expect a hefty 8% increase to be rammed down our throats unless we do something about it. At the last Board meeting, the fee in- crease proposal was supposed to come forward from the Finance Committee. I was assured of this personally by college Vice-President Brad Campbell in early January. Our International Students’ Rep, Chris Carey was also told this, by college President Alan Barkley himself. As things unfolded, the recom- mendation shall not in fact, appear until the next board meeting (on Feb 8), yet Mr. Campbell tried to put it down to a “miscommunication”. I, personally, find that highly evasive, after the Tuition Freeze Campaign Committee worked long hours to get students out to that meeting. It appears, to me, that they are trying to break our momentum, but I also think that they underestimate us. We shall not be stopped by delays or evasion. We shall not be discour- aged. I believe that the students of this college have had too much of the irresponsible, unaccountable crap that this administration feeds us every year. It's gone too far, and this year we are putting our foot down. NO MORE INCREASED USER FEES. LET PUBLIC EDUCATION REMAIN PUBLIC! Next] i bing fa Feber ary 28. Yes, that's during reading week.
