While most of the College’s day-to-day opera-
tions are handled by the Administration, Staff and
Faculty, the ECCAD Board of Trustees has a re-
sponsibility to carefully make decisions regarding
the future growth and well-being of the College.
These responsibilities are outlined at length in the
College and Institute Act (CIA).

The board is currently made up of eleven
members (CIA, part 3, item 6: “The board of a
college shall consist of 5 or more members ap-
pointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.”)It
is the Ministry of Advanced Education and Job
Training which appoints Board members to their
positions and decides how many shall serve at a
given college. Appointments run from one to three
years and can be renewed. The board meets
monthly at the College. Six of the board members
live out of town; travel and accommodation ex-
penses incurred as a result of the monthly meetings
are covered by the College. Members receive an
honorarium of $2000.00 each per annum from the
College for their work on the Board. This money
comes from the College’s Operating Budget.

Following are brief profile/biographies of each
member. It is interesting to note the diverse
backgrounds of Board members, many of whom
serve on other art councils and committees around
the province.

Mrs. Patricia Bovey: (residence: Victoria,
B.C.) With an extensive background in arts admini-
stration, Mrs. Bovey has been the Director of the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria since 1980. Prior to
that she served for ten years at the Winnipeg Art
Gallery. She has a B.A. in Art history from the
University of Toronto. Mrs. Bovey’s writing has
appeared in numerous arts publications. She is
presently the Chairperson of the ECCAD Board
and it is in this capacity that she assists President
Alan Barkley during the graduation ceremonies.
She has been on the Board since 1982 and has been
the Chair for two years.

Mrs. Valerie Brouwer: (residence: West
Vancouver, B.C.) A painter, whose oils reflect the
“coast feeling” of B.C., Mrs. Brouwer was first
appointed to the Board in February of 1984. She is
an active member of the Friends of Emily Carr (set
up <o raise scholarship funds) and has fond memo-
ries of her student days at the Vancouver School of
Art. She serves on a number of art councils in West
Van., is “totally committed to the arts”, and enjoys
her involvement on the ECCAD Board.

Mr. Wyn Davies: (residence: Courtenay,
B.C.) Mr. Davies is currently the art Co-ordinator
for the Courtenay School District. He has spent
close to thirty years teaching art at secondary and
university levels and has worked with ECCAD over
the years on a variety of projects including Celebra-
tion ’88, the Expo Children’s Art Exhibition and the
B.C. Young Artists committee. Over the years Mr.
Davies has conducted workshops in almost 90% of
the school districts in B.C., and is the immediate
past President of the B.C. Art Teacher’s Associa-
tion. He was appointed to the ECCAD Board in
July, 1987.

Mr. Ian Falconer: (residence: Vancouver, B.C.)

Mr. Julio Humperdinck: (residence:
Malibu, Cal.) A popular entertainer in Las Vegas
and N.Y.C., Mr. Humperdinck has been on the
Board since 1986, when he first came to Vancouver
to perform at Expo. He.feels his experience as a
lounge singer and his extensive world travels have
prepared him well for the B.C. arts scene. An
advocate of lycra and aftershave, Mr. Julio has
strong concerns for the degree program at ECCAD.
He feels his major contribution to the Board has
been his well-loved rendition of “Feelings”, with
which he begins each meeting.

Mrs. Elizabeth Jarvis: (residence: Vancou-
ver B.C.) Born in Austria, Mrs. Jarvis earned her
B.A. at U.B.C. and has lived in Vancouver most of
her life. She was the Vice President of Vancouver
Community College for nine years, and is presently
the Vice Chair of the Centennial Museum. Jarvis
describes her occupation as “housewife and volun-
teer” and is interested in a wide range of art, from
traditional painting to native carving and crafts.
She feels the Industrial Design program at the
College will be exciting, and she supports the
College’s quest for degree-granting status. She was
appointed to the Board in June of ’88.

Ms. Judy Jephson: (residence: Terrace,
B.C.) No information was available at press time.

Mrs. Carolyn Johnston: (residence:
Quesnel, B.C.) A strong supporter of establishing a
degree program at ECCAD, Mrs. Johnston has
served on the Boards of both the Quesnel School
District and the College of New Caledonia (Prince
George). She has a B.A. in English and Psychology
(UBC) and is presently a librarian and enrichment
specialist for School District 28 (Quesnel). She has
served on the ECCAD Board since January, 1984,
and feels the College offers “the most stimulating,
exciting, and valid art education in the province”.

Mr. Donald Shumka: (residence: Vancou-
ver, B.C.) Having earned a B.A. in Economics at
U.B.C. Mr. Shumka went on to get his Masters at
Harvard. He is the Vice President of Finance at
West Fraser Timber Co. and has worked in the
forest industry in B.C. for four years, after two and
a half years in N.Y. Mr. Shumka describes himself
as a modest collector of art and has been privately
drawing and painting for years. He was appointed
to the Board in the spring of ’87 and serves on an
internal Executive Committee (with Chair Pat
Bovey and Val Brouwer) which expedites admini-
stration of Board decisions. He believes that
through promotion of the College and with assis-
tance from the business community ECCAD can
maintain the quality of it’s programs and work
towards a viable degree program. Friend of several
instructors and students, Mr. Shumka expressed
the wish of the Board to be viewed as accessible
and open to active student input.

Ms. Gloria Webster: (residence: Alert Bay,
B.C.) Curator/administrator of the U’mista Cul-
tural Centre in Alert Bay since 1979, Ms. Webster
has been on the ECCAD Board since June 1987.
She has a keen interest in native art and feels that,
in general, the arts do not receive the kind of
support they deserve.

Ms. Helen Wilfert: (residence :Kelowna,
B.C.) Ms. Wilfert is the co-owner of Hambleton
Galleries, the oldest and largest commercial art
gallery in the Interior. At the College she serves on
the Charles H. Scott Gallery Committee, and has
been on the Board since June, 1987 Sheisa
graduate of UBC and has taught for two semesters
at Okanagan College (19th and 20th Century Art
History). She has served on the Boards of the
Kelowna and District Arts Council and the Oka-
nagan Symphony Society. In her own words: “My
occupation speaks for the interest I have in the
marketing aspect of graphic and sculptural art.
Concomitant with this is my interest in the educa-
tion of those creative individuals who will produce
the art and design of tomorrow.”

Mr. Ron Woodall: (residence: West Vancou-
ver, B.C.). Known as a conceptual writer and film
director specializing in TV commercials, Mr.
Woodall is a graduate of the Montreal Museum of
Fine arts. He has extensive experience in advertis-
ing and has won numerous awards for his creativ-
ity. He was the consulting Creative director of
Expo ’86 and is currently on the Board of Governors
of Science World, which will re-open in 1989 with
an innovative mix of science and art. Mr. Woodall
has served on the ECCAD Board since 1986. He is
surprised at the low level of student attendance at
Board meetings.
