Page Forty-Eight The Sea Gull a) Soliloquy By Beatrice Lennie AM the Sea Gull! My life is free and unconfined; in the early morn- ing I am the first to see the beams of glowing fire touch the somnolent ocean’s purple ripples. I gaze down in its serene blue at noon; and later, when the rose tints caress its motley wavelets | rejoice with the rising waves in their glory. Evening—the steely blue billows rise higher, the atmosphere is threateningly still. I prepare myself for the wild revelry which the night will bring. Then—when a cloak so dark that the stars become frightened and tremble, engulfs the world, | flap over the foamy-crested, roaring chariots of the sea; I watch the fire- works of the elements and scream with the wild glory of it all. Por a time deep purple or murky blackness stares up at me from below, the white-capped waves boom on the pale sands, while | follow them on their mad career. Often on a Summer day | have looked down on the apparently azure sea, and tried to define its colouring. At times it seems as if each glistening drop was made up of fire and rainbows. The sun touches the crests and turns them rosy pink, pale mauve and other transcendant hues. In the Winter the little rainbows are lost and cool greys, somber purples, or deep indigos unite to form a garb of mourning. But Spring is here! I look down from my lofty perch on some ship’s deck to my beloved; swirling beneath me, jade green, and sparkling ‘neath the touch of spring sunshine. | am the Sea Gull! I wander far and near, over the ocean’s horizon; I see strange sights, awful sights, but | keep my mistress’ secrets and merely croak my greeting to mankind. Established 1910 Phone: Sey. 2562 W. M.
