Tools for Peace is a project to provide material aid to Nicaragua to assist the people to develop their country -into a peaceful and prosperous one. At present, 60% of Canadian aid to Central America goes to Honduras. In the last three years, over $40 million has gone to this Central American country while only “5 million has been sent to Nicaragua. Unfortunately, during the last two years the military leaders of Honduras have embarked on a major campaign to turn Honduras into a major military power in Central America and have used the country and its military power to interfere in neighboring countries. Our government is aware of this and has already cancelled the export: permits for the sale of $30 million worth of STOL aircraft to Honduras. This action followed the decision by West Germany to suspend all military aid to Honduras and protests by many Canadian churches. | | | | t i + By giving so much to Honduras, our government has given comparatively little aid to other countries in Central America. Nicaragua received only $240,000 worth of bilateral (government to government) aid during the past three years. Our government has been more generous with food aid and has sent $4.5 million worth of wheat. Today a genuine effort to improve the living standards of the Nicaraguan people is underway. Canadians should write their MPies to ask that Canada shift more of its ‘aid program to Nicaragua. In the meantime, we can help out by supporting the Tools for Peace’project. A freighter docked in Vancouver is being filled with all kinds of equipment, tools, educational material, toys, etc. Art materials are certainly an appropriate contribution, as is any kind of equipment or material in good shape (no broken stereos, please). If you have something you'd like to send to our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua, please bring it ta the Student Society office by December 2nd.
