4 PLANET OF THE ARTS | Novemper 1995 PRR nen IIlustration: Tsyn Low Interview with The Vampires (anonymous) I was going to my interview for ECIAD, coming from Camosun College. It was an interview for 2nd year film with Jan-Marie Martell, Dennis Burke and David Rimmer. I showed them my video, and after it was finished they went, “oh ya? thanks...” Then | was sitting down talking to them, and I was really nervous, trying to explain my video to them. All of a sudden this flash goes off in front of my face, and I look up and Dennis has taken a Polaroid picture of me. Jan-Marie started giving him shit, telling him how rude that was. Then when the Polaroid picture appeared, they all laughed at it because I was in mid-sentence and looking really flustered when he took the photo. Then they were really condescend- ing, grumpy, and seemed like they didn’t want to be there, and didn’t want to talk to me. I didn’t end up getting into the program, but I don’t think I’d want to be in it after that interview. ro S is! 4 >sS' Audio/Visual Hell (Robin Barr, 4th year Film/Video) One time when I was doing a shoot, I was putting some of the gear in my car. I got in my car, closed the doors, backed up, and I heard this ‘bump’ And so | stopped the car, got out, and | guess I ran over... I ran over the video camera. uh oh, don’t tell him this— Phil’s walking by... ok. I ran over the edge of the pack, and I didn’t wreck anything. I was quite lucky. That’s a horror story. Audio/Visual Hell, II (Phil Jones, A/V staff) We've found all sorts of A/V equipment like boom poles, video cameras, 35mm cameras, that people have just left there on Granville Island. Stu actually found a piece of equipment up at 12th and Cambie that he recog- nized and brought back. Once we get the equipment back, we like to get a hold of the people who'd signed them out, and reiterate to them the importance of taking good care of the equip- ment and always having it on their person and not forgetting it. We then put the fear of God into them. Audio/Visual Hell, Ill (Phil Jones) A photography student who was in 4th year (who will remain name- less at this time), tapped into a 340 volt circuit and pro- ceeded to disas- semble a junction box, which was live. He was on a ladder, 14 feet in the air above the ground at the time. He soon found himself on the ground. Scratching his head, he promptly left the College and went out to have a good stiff drink. Thefts-R-Us (Alex Cram, 3rd year Photo) Last year, in 2nd year photo, all of my liquid light photographs went ‘missing’ off the drying racks. There were 10 or 12 of them. I put up posters and told everybody in the photo department what hap- pened, cried, complained, stomped my feet, and then started over. The photo department considered com- pensating me for the material costs, but that never happened and I didn’t follow it up. I was pretty discouraged... I guess I’m pretty naive, because I trust people, and leave my belongings everywhere. Also, last week, my Willie Nelson mug got stolen. It’s really impor- tant to me. Even more important than last year’s lost photographs. I think it was stolen from the print- making studio spaces, off of a counter. I left it there and when I| came back it was gone. It’s a white mug with the word ‘Willie’ in the shape of the U.S.A. in stars and stripes. It’s a very, very sentimen- tal belonging. I have a great attachment to it, so if possible, whoever has it, could you please return it, even anonymously, to Planet of the Arts. ECIAD Immobility Program (Linda Szasz, 3rd year Studio) I’m a transfer student from Camosun College in Victoria. I came to Emily Carr because of its exchange program. When I started classes last year, I asked several times for information about the exchange program, and I was assured that I would receive notice in my mailbox, not to worry, and that it all happens in the spring. So the time rolls around, and people are talking about the exchange program, and I’m think- ing, “well, I'll get notification about it.” Someone tells me that the deadline had just passed yes- terday. So I go marching into the office and tell them that I’ve missed the deadline, and didn’t receive any notification, and I was basically told to fuck off (not in so many words), and I hit a brick wall. I had to get people to vouch for me that I wasn’t a lying student who’s just trying to shmooze. So I was given 24 hours to put together an application package, needless to say it wasn’t a very good package, and I didn’t get into the exchange program. I wanted to go to Australia. Bike Troubles (Paxton Downard, 3rd year Photo) I had my bike locked up to Emily Carr’s bike racks for a few days, and found out that they were changing them ‘cause they were red, and ECIAD wanted blue ones. I came back to get my bike, and it was missing. I went to the goons in the rubber suits at the Granville Island Maintenance shop, and they said they didn’t know what hap- pened. They said there was nothing they could do, that it was stolen. It turns out that Granville Island Maintenance had just cut off my lock, and left my bike there. Luckily, some kind soul saw my bike sitting there vulnerably, and had it put into ECIAD Facilities. Three weeks later some came by and said, “hey, there’s a bike in the boiler room,” and it was mine. This all happened about 1 month after ECIAD circulated a memo warning us about bike thieves around Granville Island. I think there’s a lack of understand- ing and not much tact on behalf of Granville Island. Indigestion (anonymous) Samosas give me gas. | think it’s all those peas. Gary’s Rubbish Removal (Cal Cooper, 2nd year Painting) At the end of Foundation, last year, I had finished a 15 foot wide drawing that I’d been working on for 4 months. It was supposed to go into the Foundation Show. I had it leaning beside my locker for one week for storage. There was a warning posted up that said that anything on top of lockers in the Foundation hallway would be thrown out at the end of that week. I got to school at noon on the day of that deadline and my drawing had already been thrown out! This only happens in Ist year. Bike Troubles, II (Jeremy Mendes, 4th year Sublime) Last year at the end of the year, I was trying to get my work done, and I was in the metal-shop working. I was busy coming and going, and hadn't locked my bike up, so I went outside to check it out, and put a lock on it or bring it inside. I come outside, and my bike’s lying on the ground, and I get closer, and the back wheel’s been taken off. I though, “wow, someone's stolen my wheel.” I got even closer and | realized that the front and rear derailleurs had been totally smashed off of it, and I’m like, “holy crap, what the hell is goin’ on?!” I look even closer, and someone had sawed through my frame at the back.
