14 Planet of the Arts / October 1996 local scene Needed: scheduling Who to contact at this time: Charlene Hoyt, Paul Morstad SATELLITE LOUNGE Great Strides Bein OFFICIAL BLUEPEIN PTS Working The Part-time Students Working Group is fired up for a great fall of art making. Some of the recent triumphs of the PTSWG are two well attended summer barbecues. Also, a description of the Part-Time Students Working Group was inserted in the Fall/Spring PTS Calendar, on the back inside cover. And we now have a PTSWG hotline, which can be accessed by dialing 844-3868, and then pressing PTSS (7877). Information on meeting times and events will be recorded on the hotline. You can also use it to tell us what's on your mind. Greater awareness of the PTSWG has helped to increase the profile and spirit of Emily Carr’s part-time student contingency. With the continued efforts of PTS class liaisons, a solidarity can be developed which will enable the PTS constituency to address issues of concern for them. These issues may range from interest in social events to concerns over access to equipment and resources within the Institute. Several specific concerns were identified by the PTSWG over the summer. With the adoption of the 1996-97 Students’ Union budget, it is timely to ask ourselves: “Do we want a say in how ECIAD Students’ Union spends OUR Money?” My answer to that question is a definitive YES! In order for our voice to be heard some of us must attend S.U. executive committee meetings on a regular basis. Also worth considering are possible program resource cuts that will affect the PTS constituency in some REAL ways. From page 12 in the PTS Fall/Spring Calendar, we are told: The Institute anticipates an increased enrollment of Diploma/Degree students in Fall 1996 and Spring 1997 Part-time Studies Programs, which will leave fewer available spaces for Non- Diploma students. It is therefore recommended that Non-Diploma students, who wish to continue taking courses, apply for Diploma/Degree status. The admission of Non- Diploma students to credit courses is currently under review and changes, which may reduce access, could occur in the 1997/1998 semesters. [emphases added] We have already seen some clear examples of limits to access in the PTS Fall 1996 programmes. Intro- Photo has a class limit of 12 students. Three of those spaces were made available to Non-Diploma students and nineteen people were being interviewed for them. After the evening was said and PROGRAMMING performers from Emily Carr and from the acoustic and amplified music poetry, stand-up, fringe-type theatre performance art student films and videos departmentally-based social events, exhibits, speakers - people interested in helping to run events (door, security, clean up) - people with names of possible performers (including themselves) - people interested in assisting with overall 3 done, there were eleven people on the waiting list. That is enough for an additional class of Intro-Photo made up of Non-Diploma people alone, never mind Diploma and Degree students. | can follow this up with other examples which indicate that there is a need for additional courses. Introductory Typography, Introductory Electronic Communication, Drawing and 2-D Language and Introductory Studio Painting — all had enough Non- Diploma students on the wait list to warrant offering another class. We can make recommendations to the Administration concerning program alternatives. HEY ECIAD, listen to the PTS constituency. In another arena, how can we take a look at the process for determining the allocation of funds? During a press conference at Emily Carr with Moe Sihota, Minister of Education, Skills Training and Labour, the issue of funding and FTEs came ups ETE Needed: SATELLITE LOUNGES futon-type couches in at least 5 locations (N.B. must be a fire-retardent material) e student artwork and plants to provide context e places to crash during the long nights ahead e places to take a break during the day - people interested in deciding whether Emily Carr students are willing to construct the futon-type couches or whether they have to be bought - people interested in soliciting art work for display in these spaces Who to contact at this time: Celest Brown, Nathaniel Akin stands for “full-time equivalent”, and is calculated only on the basis of credit courses. More flexible, non- credit course programming that could be of interest to Non-Diploma and other students is excluded from the FTE count. Without a change in the Ministry's policy on this issue accessibility to Emily Carr’s resources is too rigidly structured to meet the needs of many people interested in high level continuing fine art education. Moe indicated to us that he is open to discussion regarding issues of concern to the PTS constituency at Emily Carr. When Planet of the Arts facilitator Harald Gravelsins and Kwantlen College’s newspaper editor Hettie Phillips asked questions relevant to the PTS constituency, the response from the Minister was that he did not know how to address some of the issues, for example, limits on accessibility due to pressures on operation budgets. But Moe encouraged more communication. | want the Part-Time Students Working Group to establish a dialogue with Moe. In doing so the concerns of the part-time constituency can be properly represented where it counts — at the highest level. There is a lot that the PTS constituency can be positive about. The Part-Time Students Working Group has put together a proposal for a fall PTS Show: Outside/In [see page 15]. If accepted, the show will consist of a dialectic exploration of the artistic process, a celebration of inclusiveness, and will incorporate a range of media. Call the hotline and leave us a message if you are curious, or want to be involved. If you think you can add some fuel to our flame, or if you're smoldering about PTS issues, the hotline is the best way to stoke the fire. <@s 14 Planet of the Arts / October 1996 PROGRAMMING + performers fom Emily Care and from the focal scene acoustic and amplified musie poetry, stand-up, fringe-type theatre performance art.
