The greatest stress How, if some day or night a demon were to sneak after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you, “This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new to it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything immeasurably small or great in your life must return to you — all in the same succession and sequence — even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned over and over, and you with it, a dust grain of dust.”’ Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or did you once experience a tremendous moment when you would have answered him, ‘You are a god, and never have I heard anything more godly.” If-this thought were to gain possession of you, it would change you, as you are, or perhaps crush you. The question in each and every thing, “Do you want this once more and innumerable times more?” would weigh upon your actions as the greatest stress. Or how well disposed would you have to become to yourself and to life to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal? : Fred Neech, 1882 § e 7, Saturday March 17th at 9 pm sort of an Irish/Roman orgy in costume at the Pitt Adeste Fidelis GRADUATING STUDENTS Please meet in the Green Room March 8th at 4:00 pm with Sally Lockhurst. The meeting will deal with formulating a graduate committee to discuss and design a poster for the Grad Show, and nominate faculty and student representatives to evaluate work by graduating students. Impression Oh mighty seymour, mouthpiece of the gods, refrain from stuttered speech for you have so much to say and so few who will listen. Make your words clear, for when we hear your cheerful words, images of spring and sunshine leap into our depressingly ignorant little minds. It has often been said “ah, if only I could see more clearly”’ Perhaps enlightenment comes with international shows. A. NONY MOUS. Deadline/deadline For all students and staff involved in the Alternative Studies program, this is a final remin- der of the upcoming deadline for all material. Completed submissions must be in by March 12th. They can be handed in to Carol in the school library during the day, and also be left in the art history slide room at Water Street, 1:00-4:00 pm from Monday to Friday. A budget has been provided to produce z book concerning work done in our program, ir the form of a documentary catalogue, to be available in and outside ECCA by mid-April. The catalogue will be a folder with loose, un- bound pages, allowing for flexibility; one can take pages out to use in portfolios, display, or whatever. Each of us has two pages which can be designed and presented in whichever ways we de- sire. The catalogue will consist largely of Black and White photographs or line drawings ‘‘pasted up” on blue-line sheets. These sheets are available at the desk in the school library, speak to Carol. You can glue photographs, for example, directly on the blue-line sheets. The blue lines are for lining up your material and facilitating design, and do not reproduce in the actual catalogue. You can print directly on the blue-line sheets with black pen, or use letraset, or write/type on a section of paper and then glue it on the sheet. If you have any questions about how to proceed with your paste-up sheets, please come to our next meeting at 21 Water Street, Wednesday March 7th at 1:00 pm. Each person is asked to do his/her own layout. Photographing of th layout sheets will occur as soon as possible after March 12th. The general theme for this catalogue is CONNECTIONS, however you choose to involve “connections” in your work. On the other hand, you may not choose to adhere to this, and then present whatever it is that has occupied your work and thoughts. We hope everyone will participate in this venture, and we look forward to publishing whatever is brought forth. For example, if your work is environmental or per- formance or sculptural, you could document that and/or talk about it in any which could fit into the catalogue format.
