| PIPSLINE: by chrs-bradshaw DEMONSTRATION AGAINST CUTBACKS : Everyone in the College is aware (or should be) of the deplor- able situation which we are facing in post-secondary education these days. Government cutbacks to every facet of education are coming into effect, with the real crunch coming next September, when the new budgets come into effect. Simon Fraser University stands to lose it's entire athletic department and face major cuts in other areas of the univer- sity; community colleges all over B.C. face the choice, whether to cut their fine arts programs in favor of ‘employable' curric- ulum, or to suffer cuts to all facets of education. At SFU, the Student Society is being asked to increase their student fees an additional $6.00, in order to keep the athletic program functioning; the Student Society of Emily Carr is already supporting curricular activities which should be the responsibil- ity of the Administration (the ''Women in Art'' lecture series, which was turned down for 'budgetary' considerations) and sugg- estions from students and staff have come to us, in regards to Society support for the recently cancelled ‘Open Drawing' session. Students are now being asked to directly fund curricular activ- ities at the same time as our tuitions are steadily increasing (our tuition goes up 38%, to $600.00 next year). So where do we draw the line? One way is to participate in the upcoming demon- stration against government cutbacks to education, on Friday, March 12, 1982 . The only recourse that we have, in order to be heard, is to utilize the media, which only reacts to strong statements. The strength of our statement can only come through a massive turn- out at this rally. A map of the route and schedule is included for your benifit. The rally starts at 1:30p.m. and ends at 4:00p.m. on Friday; not an unreasonable request on our time- table.
