Our first theme, text/subtext, probes the very foundation of Influx, the very base of art, design, media, and culture. It provides a chance for explanation and exploration of the essence of it all. This is why we chose text/subtext to introduce the next phase of Influx. Words. Text. These are the basis of our civilization. These are what keep modern society connected. Yet words are one of the most beautifully malleable entities of humanity. I have always loved the possibilities that language holds. The ridiculous sound that a word becomes when you repeat it hundreds of times. How a word in different handwriting, although spelt correctly can look wrong. How there are hundreds of different languages with different letters and sounds and constructions that all exist to say the same things, to communicate between people. English language, with it’s synonyms and homonyms, holds the possibilities of puns, inferences, misunderstandings... Every sentence, every word, is at the mercy of each persons interpretation, of the upbringing and surroundings which have molded their thought patterns. The fact that anything can be anything, that language has the power to conjure images, communicate ideas, incite hatred, or love... this is it’s beauty. It is merely shapes, symbols on a surface, or abstract sounds strung together. Yet they have come to represent so much more.
