They begin to read, they begin to be influenced, they begin to think. At one moment, having grasped an idea, they ‘ feel they understand the very workings of art—they feel they have the tradition of painting under their belts. The next moment the world is bleak, no art exists, there is no hope for humanity. Then they wonder if they are sensitive enough, whether they are too egotis- tic. They doubt that they will be as great as Cézanne. This depresses them. They read poetry, listen to music, paint an expression of living. This is their original dis- covery, so they must write a ‘Theory of Art.” There are many more unpleasant qualities belonging to ‘adolescent artists’’ but, on the whole, they grow out of their serious condition, and settle down to paint.
