Berni Part-Time Studies Crea- tive Process Feb. 11th, 1994 Terry Miller 3-4th year Multi-Media My respose to “The Financial Crisis.” I’m neither shocked by the current crisis nor am | outraged by the recommended changes. No, | am not some snotty nosed parentally spon- sored wealthy kid. | work part time, as | assume most of us might, and | am not pleased by the increased costs and cuts in services that are coming but like everywhere else, it would seem inevitable. The pretence that we are invited to be involved in the process is probably the most offensive part of the scenario. | know little of balancing budgets and the suggestion that | might have a solution to the current economic crises is a bad joke. | am also offended, though again not surprised, by the finger pointing blame game that seems to be infecting us all. Whether it’s the thinly veiled brave, (but anonymous), valid ques- tions raised in the “Crit Your Staff” article in the last planet or the ATTEN- TION ALL STUDENTS questionnaire | found in my box that asks questions that clearly have expected negative responses attached to them. : ' We, as students should always be concerned about our learning process, consistently involved in questioning whether we are getting what we want or need from the Art education system embodied in ECCAD and considering whether the individu- als that deliver the services are doing their jobs. | highly recommend a student organized and administered review process that each semester and/ or year assesses and publishes a review of the services that we are delivered. To attach this process to the “crisis” that is current, however, demeans the importance of that process by making it a blame centred activity. Any system contains within it the potential for individuals who are working exceptionally hard, individuals who are plugging along doing perhaps their best and individuals who are, for whatever reason, hiding out, drifting or being carried by others. | would suggest that, for the most part, the above examples are the exceptions not the rule, | could be wrong. This does not mean we should ignore problematic realities, but get real. Even if these people do work at ECCAD, they are not responsible for the economic situation any more than Maurice is, or the board, or the government for that matter. | choose to entertain the conspiracy theory myself. A world domination by multi- national companies that pull the strings on democratically elected puppet governments. The strings of course being the bank lending rates. Blame the IMF if it will do any good. New Zealand and Ontario attempted to ignore it and look where it got them. Crises can represent opportu- nity and | hope, when the decisions for change are made that they include the innovation and creativity one would hope for from administrators who have risen from the ranks of the art students themselves. | refer of course to the Khaki Flack jacketed Maurice. Hi editors! This is my response to the questionaire. Tzaddi Gordon, 2nd yr, studio (3D) Most of my teachers | can easily contact out of class. Even phoning them at home is no problem. But they don’t spend much time with me outside of class; | don’t ask for it. | generally feel that my teachers have prepared adequately. Problems—! hear about teachers who don’t even teach but I’ve never had one like that. But Maurice giving us a bogus budget without itemizing any of their spending is bullshit, like most of what he had to say at the forum. Another problem is student apathy and | include myself in that one. Few of us are willing to get on the govern- ment’s back about this. Solutions—Make a school! store, not full of tacky ECCAD paraphanalia but of student’s work; the tourists would eat it up! (the pre-christmas ceramic & print sale was a bustling success) Make it so the pieces are sold on consignment; if it sells, the school and student split the money, maybe on a percentage basis or a flat fee paid to the store when the work sells... students - learn about what sells for how much - might still be able to afford to go here - can work in the store either in the same type ofarrangement as goes on in the school supply store, or it could be for credit to apply to tuition, or an elective could be made for students to learn about surviving as a commercial artist, part of which could be working in the store. ECCAD - makes good coin off starving students’ talent A great space for this would be in the current accounting office, being that it’s so visible to the public and easily accesible to them as well. Maybe accounting can take over the offices of the administration Maurice said would be laid off or maybe a suitable space will exist in the new building? ! have no problem with the current school hours but | think closing the school at 10 on weekends is too early for me. However, | never stay past midnight myself and on weekends I’m hard pressed to make it here before 10 or 11 in the morning. So for me good hours would be Mon-Fri 7:30 to 11, Sat 10:30 to 12, Sun 10:30 to 11. But! know there are students who can only work late, So... | am generally satisfied by the college facilities, not always by the studio assistants, and certainly not by the hours of access to power tools. er Berni Part-Time Studies Crea- tive Process Feb. 11th, 1994 Terry Miller 3-4th year MultiMedia ‘My respose to “The Financial Crisis.” I’m neither shocked by the current crisis nor am I outraged by the recommended changes.
