18 Planet of the Arts / October 1996 : Favourite: “~ ‘ Connie Sterrit, “Untitled” — : ; I like it because Connie has taken the State of this art to a higher level-it = * : exhibits a sense of roots. My feelings for this piece come out of my : background and experience and - oo] : somehow they’ve met with the artist’s ability, background and experience. It’s probably just lucky that I came along at this time to experience it. Concept by Harald Gravelsins Research and photography by Jonathan Lander (June 1996) Least Understood: None Understanding is a subjective phenomena and it might not follow the intent of the artist, but nonetheless you can develop an understanding of an artwork. Understanding the intent of the artist is a different problem. Part of the reason that I work at Emily Carr is to be involved and keep abreast of the state of the arts. Alan McMillan, Registrar Lee Nicholas, Counselor Favourite: Connie Sterrit, “Untitled” I find this piece inspirational. I find the detail and intricacy very exciting, and as I step back and view the whole piece, I get a sense of history, and a positive feeling. Least Understood: Scott Evans, “Non- Organic Being” It looks to me like a bowling pin and a gross.of donuts. The more I think about it, the less I understand it... but it’s well done! Favourite: Linda Laine, “Horizon Line” ° ° There’s so much going on in these paintings. There’s a sense of Brad Campbell, Former Acting Chief urgency, struggle, survival, and intensity. Yet these images also : = convey a quality of peacefulness. I don’t know how Linda succeeded . in putting these elements together, but the power is there. Favourite: Rita Beiks, “The Globe and Male, Dec. 6, 1995” I thought what Rita did was quite amazing-to re-establish the remembrance of the 1989 Montreal Massacre and keep this issue up front in society — her work was really ingenious. Least Understood: Toby Barrat,“Hack Squat” Least Understood: I don’t understand what the circles refer to. They draw the eye to Scott Evans, “Non-Organic Being” = whatever is in them, but I don’t see anything that is that much It’s very unique, and striking — it certainly ; different there from any other part of the work. The other thing is stands out in the show. But I wouldn’t want it that I don’t particularly like body-building. in my livingroom. — Cynthia Wright, PTS Studio Assistant SAFEWALK A walk safe program for the Emily Carr community to commence in October. Hours of operation Mon — Sun 8:00 p.m. — 3:00 a.m. (subject to volunteer availability) Favourite: Yarrow Koontz, “Monster (she creeps)” I like the artist’s use of = mixed-media. It’s very painterly. Her canvases evoke the dark, mystical side of one’s unconscious. Least Understood: Scott Evans, “Non-Organic Being” I don’t understand it - it needs explanation. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to understand something to like it. 18 Planet of the Arts / October 1996 Connie tert, “Untied? | 1k because Cone has taken the stat of this art to a higher level ~t exits a sense of oot: My felings fortis pece come out of my background and experience and somehow they've met with the artists bly, background and experence its probably us Tacky that came ong at thls time to experience i Least Understood: None Understanding isa subjective phenomena and it might not follow the intent ofthe artist, but nonetheless you can develop an ‘understanding of an artwork, Understanding the intent of the atist Isa different problem.
