Rock Bottom @ | would like to use my space this month to address the recent Mardi Gras riots which took place in Seattle and Philadelphia this past Ash Wednesday. | feel obligated to bring this to the public's attention as no other news source seems to deem it necessary. Unfortunately, the earthquake on the follow- ing day pushed these disgusting acts out of the evening news. By disgusting acts | am referring to guns being fired into crowds, innocent people being beat to the ground for no reason, and people's cars being destroyed. In Seattle, several people were taken to the hospital, two of whom were in critical condition at the time. | cannot tell you their current status, how- ever, as all of the major and local news web-sites fail to make any mention of the riot or it's repercussions whatsoever, which is, in all seriousness, some messed up shit. This above all else should be the top story being broadcast! I'm sure that the mayor of Seattle is thanking god for the earthquake occurring at the time that it did, as now his city doesn't have the gutter image it deserves right now. The lack of coverage of this event could be attributed to two factors. One: that the city is so overcome by the disaster of the earthquake, that the riots seem unimportant in com- parison, or two: that the media is using a natural disas- ter to sweep the riot under the rubble in order to gain federal funding for repairs. Try telling that to the thir- teen-year-old in the hospital or the families of the two people who were almost beat to death. The journalists choosing to ignore this issue and the news stations responsible for pushing this story to the sidelines should be ashamed of themselves; a political ploy should never take precedence over the interests of the people. ee pest part about ; (1s that it’s made 4, i.
