Saas Then, their squires having polished and oiled their armour afresh, with lances in rest, the two warriors galloped madly down the lists. At the first shock, Sir Slightly’s horse had the misfortune to lose both front feet, while Sir Avoir du Pois lost one of his own legs. Nothing daunted, however, they charged again and yet again, until in the final bout Sir Slightly dropped his spear and was chased igno- miniously from the lists by his victorious rival. The victor re-ap- peared trotting proudly up the hall, carrying on his spear-point his opponent’s helmet, which he presented to the King on bended knee. A golden wreath of laurel leaves was given him, with which he crowned his lady, the Queen of Beauty, then galloped off amid the applause of all present. Altogether, the Ball was decidedly a success, and it is hoped it will prove the first of a long line of increasingly beautiful Period Cos- tume Balls. PHYLLIS KIRKPATRICK. CONSUMING ART N what way does art appeal to you? Some objects appeal to the eye only, while others strike some responsive chord in our being. Here is a third channel through which art an Ny ae This may sound insane to some of you, but it is the truth. During my three years teaching up in the Peace River district, I came across various types of children; some of them had never known the little luxuries of life which to most of us are common occur- rences. They had simple, wholesome food, and plenty of it; fancy dishes were rare. Now here’s my story. Some of the children (probably those with the more colourful imag- inations) sought to appease their hungry souls ‘(or stomachs? ) by tearing out the coloured pictures (temptingly displayed in mag- azines) of salads, asparagus on toast, soups, roast meats, cakes, can- dies, etc., and chewing them! One outstanding “‘diner’’ was a youth of fifteen years, who smacked his lips in utter bliss. As a result my magazines were often the means of satisfying some inter- nal longing. Art certainly is down to a fine point when it can figuratively ‘‘feed the hungry.” EULA B. WALKER. Here is a new field of art for the scientist to explore. If some means could be found to actually appease the hungry in this way, what a saving there would be in grocery bills!—EpITor. [16]
