RECYCLING On behalf of the recycle committee | am writing to remind you the student body of a new recycle program about to begin at Emily Carr. You will be noticing in the next few weeks cardboard boxes and cylinders around the school (this includes the annexes). The small boxes are for office quality paper only (bond, com- puter paper, xerox and typing papers). The large bins will be collecting con- tainers for the smaller boxes. There will also be large bins for the collection of lower grade papers such as newspa- per, magazines, manilla, foolscap, telephone books and white wrapping paper. | hope you will actively participate in this first step to turning Emily Carr into a 100% recycling community. If this little speech doesn’t give you enough initiative to help out, maybe the follow- ing information will. : The Canadian pulp and paper industry is one of the world’s most polluting industries. Canadian mills dump more toxins into adjacent waters than compa- rable mills in other pulp producing countries and account for more than half of all toxins dumped into Canadian waters. In a pulp mill, the source of the toxic chlorinated discharges is the bleaching plant; the part of the mill that turns brown pulp to white. Chlorine gas used in the bleaching process forms large amounts of chlorinated compounds, or more correctly named organochlorines. The mills do have biological treatment plants that the organochlorines pass through before being discharged in the water, but they are only able to take out 30% of the chlorinated compounds. Since organochlorines can’t be broken down in these highly specialized treatment systems how can they be broken down in the environment? ons q can't! AN aw, yt" sare ( ‘t Given the average daily production of 1000 tonnes of pulp, the average Canadian pulp mill will discharge 50 tonnes of toxic organochlorine every single day. Dioxin and furans are two groups of organochliorines that are extremely toxic to both people and animals, and are resistant to biological breakdown. Dioxin causes severe reproductive disorders including birth defects:and sterility. Immune system suppression, impaired liver function and rare forms of cancer have been documented in hu- mans. In September of 1987, the pulp and paper industry reluctantly acknowl- edged that dioxin was present not only in their wastes but also in everyday consumer products such as diapers, sanitary napkins, paper plates, toilet paper, coffee filters, food packaging, and writing paper. What can you do to help? | Consumers can help in the effort toward a cleaner pulp and paper { | industry. By demanding unbleached oe c chlorine-free paper products in the grocery store, from your local paper distributors, and in your workplace, you can help create new markets for chlorine-free and/or unbleached goods. Further, consumers should try to avoid disposable paper products. As much paper as possible should be recycled, since paper products made from recycled fibre require little or no further bleaching. Re-use of this fibre also conserves trees.
