With spoken word, body art and a fashion show it's nice to see that some people in Vancouver are trying to do things, rather than complain that nothing is ever done. Band>Canned Hamm Album>Karazma Label>ProAm Apparently they were spawned from the karaoke scene. Urban myth? How the hell should | know, | don’t pay attention to karaoke. To really understand these guys, you need to see them live. If you've been one of the privileged few to witness this brilliance then disregard this review because | couldn't add anything to the genius that is canned hamm. They wrote a song dedicated to fucking hairpieces! Not only do you get 12 ingenius songs, you get a number of secret answering machine messages. Now who doesn't need more of those? As a basis for comparison think of dipping french fries into ice cream. Really bad, but only in theory. In reality everyone's done it, french fries and ice cream together. So quit the wondering about how they taste together and go buy the album. In all seriousness, if you ever see a poster for one of their shows skip your mom's wedding and go. Ghost World by Nana and Dekes One of the benefits of working in a magazine is that you occasionally get free stuff. Like watching movies. So my friend Dan and | went to go see Ghost World. | was not too familiar with the comic book that this movie was based on but Dan had read it so it was nice to have someone who could actually base the review on something. So here is the edited version of our review of Ghost World. The finer plot points will be encoded as not to spoil the movies ending (which was, sadly, lame). If you wish to decode the code then just take the letters of apparent gibberish and move the letters to the one previous in the alphabet (B becomes A. got it?) Nana: (Having just left the theatre) Wow. That was a fucking great movie. Dekes: | feel like shit. It was kinda depressing. N: Yeh, it was depressing. Funny though. D: The ending was horrible. | don't understand why they did that. It was really different than the book. The thing is that the CVT in the comic is just a small part. It takes you out of SFBMJUZ and into a weird NBHJCBK place. N: Yeh, the ending was bad. The characters were great. Especially the background ones. There's a lot of R.Crumb in this movie. Steve Buscemi's character is basically R.Crumb, single and without a mustache or glasses. D: The relationship between the characters was different. N: Huh?? D: What? N: So what do you want to do tonight? D: | dunno, want to go eat? N: Sure. | liked that movie a lot. Seems like a really good approximation of people the way they are. The guy in the conveience store with the nunchuks was fuckin amazing. | think the art class was the best. Reminds me of my classes... D: Wow look at that mullet... N: Everybody's picking on mullets nowadays. Which leads us to the important question of the movie: which of the two girls was hotter? D: Definitely Thora Birch. N: Yes... | likes her. In conclusion, | liked this movie. Therefore, you will like this movie. And if anyone knows Thora Birch tell her to call me.
