Just finished my 73rd, or maybe its the 74th, moose steak since | arrived

here ... staple meat of this wild country . . . what wouldn't | give for a
delectable veal roast, right now?

Complacency, the besetting sin of the cowpuncher . . . he's nothing if not
self-satisfied . . . everything he has or does is just a shade better than
anything anyone else has or does . . . not blatant about it, just quietly
takes it for granted . . . so cheerful that one can't very well puncture his
smugness without feeling rather rotten about it. :

A sleigh just slid away over the hill . . . the local matchmaker returning
from last night's festivities with two of her eligible daughters in tow...
swoops down on every party in the district and is nice to all unattached
males under sixty . . . said to me—but maybe I'd better not.

Eggs, eggs, and yet eggs for breakfast . . . and uncompromisingly fried,
at that . . . | don't suppose I'll see a tasty omelet until | reach civilization

again.

Riding to a party . . . brilliant moon lighting up the road . . . two sleigh
loads, and four of us on horses . . . singing, shouting of rude and ribald
remarks ... lean over and scoop up a handful of snow, ride close to a
sled and jam it down the first neck handy . . . more shouts and rude
remarks. .

XI.

Been breaking ice in my water pitcher every morning for a week before
performing my ablutions . . . 40 below on my way to school this morning
. .. half the classes conducted with pupils lined up on one side of the
stove, and teacher on the other . . . stove swallows immense quantity of
three-foot slabs, but the room is not appreciably warmer . . . these log
cabins are deucedly draughty . . . | think of the design class in the attic
down at the school . . . and sympathize.

Trying to make conversation with my partners at a dance...nogo...
topics suited to similar occasions at home are useless here . . . my best
witticisms fizzle out like dud firecrackers . . . maiden dutifully giggles
