Mom, Dad, etc. is entertaining, rich, thought provoking, intriguing, glued to the edge of your seat drama. This is entertainment and food for the brain. The playwrite uses comedy to explore the issues of racism and sexism. He challenges our stereo- types of those who are different from ourselves. Are there real differences between cultures or are we all basi- cally the same at a fundamental level? All families have expectations for their children. There is the expectation that family members must look after each other because it is a cruel world out there and if you don’t have each other, you have no one. Chan portrays the struggle of a young Chinese man who chooses to live with a white girl and not go into his father’s business. These decisions go against his family belief system, which holds that he must marry a Chinese wife and carry on the family business. What is interesting, however, is Hey! For the mother, it is relationships. For the father, it is employment choices. See what | mean about universal concepts? Throughout the play there are references to pop culture and how it influences our assumptions and ways of thinking about ourselves and those different from ourselves. Chan makes this connection by switching from the narrative story to a fantasy of Mark’s, played by Daniel Chan, which resembles a B- movie. The set is made up of larger than life movie reel, reinforcing the connection to pop culture. It is Sally, played by Marya Delver, who educates Mark about Chinese culture, and explains the negative nature of how Chinese people are portrayed in mainstream films. | thoroughly enjoyed John James Hong's performance as Kim Gee, Mark’s father. He was dynamic and even though he looks youngish, he portrayed the father figure very well. My favorite lines were related to the acupunture table, where in the transition to the B-movie, it becomes the instru- ment of torture. Hong and Donna Yamamoto (who played both Yellow Craw and the mother), formed an interesting relationship on stage. Four actors portrayed 8 charac- ters. Even with so many character shifts, the play flowed with a certain spontaneity. They all worked well together on stage and were successful at transporting me into the lives of Mark and Sally. | highly recommend this play as an entertaining and thought pro- voking piece. —Jennifer Kleinsteuber moe a 4 ee ee ee a a ie al (\ bom, SY December 1996 / Planet of the Arts 37 srscns mate Tauniaae es : siamese Join The Happy Ones Mom, Dad, te reneritsreatonnips ror : ep eae I N G I'm Living 9 Scere a a witha references to pop cuture and how Emil il * ieee mily Carr Choir Wants You White Girl siessieenion cinties = ‘Chan makes this connection by és Enily cae students find musical Witten by Marty chan Sehig fom he rate ry a PRES cciet wis tne cho group.
