Through a consultative process, artists Jer Thorp and M. Simon Levin were selected to develop this program, which includes pedagogical platforms (courses, lectures, workshops) and artistic production, creating an immersive, participatory environment in conjunction with CODELIVE. Jer and Simon will meet with faculty, staff and students to discuss the various ways that the community can be involved. It is an exciting opportunity and everyone is encouraged to participate. The spaces used for CODE-LIVE will have no impact on curriculum delivery or student access and over the next few weeks, all areas (curriculum and operations) will be involved in discussions regarding how the partnership will impact Emily Carr. We are also in discussion to host a symposium during this period that will be free and open to the Emily Carr community. If you have any questions about this exciting program, please contact Lyndl Hall at lhall@ecuad.ca. Lyndl is an MAA candidate who will be the Program Assistant for the CODE programs. Self-Published Limited Edition Book, Bonne Zabolotney Making IT Happen - Leslie McDougall IT Services is currently working on a number of exciting initiatives that will benefit the Emily Carr user community. While the list is long, here are a few of our recent noteworthy activities: We are currently deploying Autodesk Maya, a powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation and visual effects solution. As a tool for animation, Maya integrates well with our Qube rendering infrastructure. In support of design curriculum, Maya integrates well with our Solidworks software. Students can now experience the top stars of 3D modeling software at Emily Carr: Maya, Softimage, and 3D Studio Max. This initiative enhances our student’s ability to build skills using the tools found in Vancouver’s, and the world’s, top animation and gaming studios. We have completed an IT security assessment and implemented a number of security enhancements, with more still to come. Our overall security program includes upgrades to our backup and recovery solution, anti-virus software upgrades, implementing Windows Security Update Service to push updates to users, proactive monitoring and alerting of system events that impact users, and a security awareness program that we are planning for the Fall. All users are encouraged to visit the IT Services website for information on protecting your PC. IT Services and the Teaching & Learning Centre have recently established an official Emily Carr University YouTube Channel for hosting University related events such as our various speaker series, guest lecturers as well as student work and promotional material. If you have any video material you think may be suitable or have any questions about the service, please contact Grant Gregson (tlc@ecuad.ca) or visit http://www. youtube.com/emilycarruniversity. George was a well-liked instructor who taught at Emily Carr, UBC and Simon Fraser. We were also saddened to hear that Bill Featherston has passed away. Bill taught at the Vancouver School of Art for 10 years and his inspired students included Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, Laurie Papou, Attila Richard Lukacs, Derek Root, Angela Grossmann and Graham Gillmore, all of whom have gone on to significant professional careers. His large-scale figurative paintings documented the social concerns of working-class heroes and characters that populated his small-town BC community. Emily Goes Green: Visions Newsletter We recently made changes to Visions that help make the printing of the newsletter more sustainable. It is now printed on 50% recycled content and is 25% post-consumer waste (PCW). Visions is also printed using vegetable inks (soy and other vegetable-based), which help prevent air and water pollution. Vegetable-based dyes also provide brighter colours and rub off less on the reader’s hands. Instead of publishing Visions three times a year, we will be publishing it only twice, cutting out approximately 6,500 printed copies per year. Readers have also been asked to advise us if they would like to receive Visions via email instead of a printed copy, which will again cut down on printed copies considerably.
