ear Dear Planet; | am writing to express concern over the pro- daycare propaganda that is being posted around the school, especially when plastered to someone else’s space or display. These people at posters are fraught with misleading and false statements. Though they suggest that 38 people at ECCAD need daycare facilities, | notice that they include staff and faculty in those numbers. | think that staff and faculty have the means to find alternative solutions. Of the remaining students a number of them likely have suitable day care in their own neighbourhoods. | would estimate that fewer than 1% of ECCAD students for whom this is a serious issue. As a woman | believe that daycare access is a serious need. What | don’t believe is that the College should allow itself to be browbeaten by a few radicals into assuming what is not their responsibility ( note that the College does not have a housing department let alone subsidized housing for students). Emily Carr College is not responsible for my aging mother, my sick cat, or my health care-all of which are integral to my family, personal and educational well-being. | am opposed to even one nickel of our education money or one square foot of our precious space being allotted to what remains a few people’s reproductive choice. Parenting is a privilege, not a rite. Let us keep that in mind. Let us also keep in mind that even in this p.c. [politically correct] age it is OK to say, as we did earlier this school year to the gentleman with swastika “art”, that expressive freedom/parenting is important but that the creators/parents need [to] then take responsibility for their actions and to recognize that often their “expressions” infringe upon the well-being of others. My hope is that most people would support the proposals. For myself, as a single mother with a young baby, day care on site or near the school would be ideal. These days there are so many horror stories of child abuse in baby-sitting situations that basically you have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that you judgment is correct. Running from home to sitter to school and back is tiring in itself but having to do that and do the rest of the things that you need to do to take care of you baby sometimes seems impossible. Having a safe place nearby where | could check in regularly would be ideal. In the so-called real world, daycare in the work place is on the agenda. With the breakdown of family structures, many of us do not have close family to help us care for our children. Many of us are from other areas of B.C. or have immigrated from other countries and some of us _ are older and have returned to school as parents of young children. This is how it is in he real world. As an institution, ECCAD is not immune from these issues. Both Langara and B.C.I.T. have daycare’s, it would be nice if ECCAD could follow in their examples. ECCAD’s daycare would be a positive thing for the college and community that surrounds us. Staff and faculty would also benefit as their wages as teachers are not exactly the highest. Kids are a part of life and by including them in our lives we can all gain. Obviously, as a mother, | am incredibly biased but these days | feel that any steps that we can take to help raise our children in a positive manner is a vote of confidence for the future...and, god knows that we need to leave this place in a better condition that we found it. What the fuck is it with the annual Photo Exhibitions and Pub Nights? Huh?! Can someone explain the phenomenon to me? Every year there seems to be some sort of event that threatens the safety of displayed works. Pub nights are great but not when your own piece, which you have worked on for months, is naked on the wall and the smoking, drinking ECCADies are getting restless. Last year, some “Chocolate/ Clay Slinging Faerie” moved several delicate pieces down against the wishes of the artists. Then, there was a coffee night ( but, at least they had the good grace to try to protect our show ). So, | guess what I’m asking is this: to all those who are planning Pub Nights to raise money for their departments, please please please try to book the gallery when their is no show in the same space. That’s it. | feel better now. Thank you. Rona, 4th year student Dear Planet; In response to the performance on March 4th, 1993, where two men sat on the stage.
