0 REVIEW 9 by Pieter Kos Dorothy Buckland's GENERATION/ REPETITION Buckland's figures in the C@éncourse last week were a remark- example of sculpture which is not a kind of sculpture which one bumps into when backing up to look at the paintings. They manifested a vital concern for the 'human' in a unique way and prove a wetcomed content in face of the majority of students' work which is informed by a more direct interest in the visual aesthetic experience. Her Generation/Repetition work brings to mind our close relationship to the fete of nature in an attitude of acceptance, perhaps resignation. The two figures made of organic matter with grass growing appear to carry this content most obviously. The two plaster fig- gures appear in contradiction to the idea of natural decay, unless perhaps regarded as actual sculptures as distinct from the organic figures which are a more direct metaphor for the human body. Thus, both humans and the products of their creativity are shown to be victims to the timeless life/death cycle. The identical reclining poses unfortunately do have a ring of artificiality, and diminishes the effect as romantic and senti- mental. The shroud piece appears as an afterthought and takes away rather than adds to the total effect. Nevertheless the total effect was gripping and certainly overwhelmed the paintings and prints found later on the walls. ~e- -@- ——e-— - @ --—_ @ ---@-- CEREAL AND/OR MEAT BY-PRODUCTS Deh Cre T~'G IRZABWIE oem —oseraigZ69 10 WA Came 4p 355 94 BRIA OS What Is the story behind that cat that's always roaming the halls of the school?
