We were given the assignment of creating hand held ritual objects that related to songs we had randomly chosen.Through-out the course Henry's work centered around the theme of scissors cutting away memories. In keep- ing with this theme and the unpleasant imagery of his song, he made a device which consisted of a small pair of scissors attached to a long, thick corkscrew- like handle, with a bound and gagged Barbie doll in the center of the spiral. One morning, Henry approached me in a rage because someone had taken his object, cut the scissor end off, and hung it back on the wall in front of our classroom. We were all shocked. It was hard to believe that an act of such blatant, ignorant vandalism would be committed in such a "sophisticat- ed" environment. Why was this done to his work? My first reaction was that someone was so offended by it that they felt they had to destroy it. When we discussed our work in class, many people agreed that the object appeared violent and misogynistic. Granted. | saw it and agree that it did bring a lot of grim ideas to mind, however, it was not intended to have that meaning. Even so, that does not give someone else the right to destroy another artist's work. At vari- ous times | have been offended or disturbed by the work of other students. Does this give me the right to walk around the sculpture studio lopping the heads off figures? Taking a step back from the issue, | thought that perhaps someone was just being a jerk or really wanted a pair of scissors. | don't know. If this was the case then it was simply an ignorant act of vandalism. Taking pleasure out of destroying someone else's work is the product of a deranged psyche. With both of these thoughts came the idea that it also happened because Henry is a first year student and his work is not taken seriously. In any case the person who did this showed a lack of respect for his or her peers. If this person wanted to make a statement and confront Henry, they should have done so to his face instead of comitting this cowardly, ignorant act which made a lot of people angry and didn't teach anyone anything. eo Completion (©) 0% al Anat, WOE ASANN ‘AS DESCRIBED BY ROB AND JULIAN ON THEIR HOUR OF POWER Time (1) Tinowing begins Tehowing ends Hwy, Aeuide anal aantenel ARTWORK VANDALIZED BY BRIAN GALLANT [At the end of last semester my friend Henry’ first year 3-0 project was van- ‘alized.
