Turps: Well, you see, Mr. Amess. It
was like this - I ate mylunch at recess
and by noon I ras too exhausted to go
on. - And besides, my trees looked
like a series of slightly seasick tele-
phone poles,

Mr, A.: (looking at painting) Yes, I'11
admit they do look undernourished. They
have a lean rnd hungry look, Well, you
have cortainly expressed your own mood
in the painting, anyway. Let's have
another look at yours, Alizarin. Hore,
I'll stand it up to get a better view
of it. (propping it up against a leafy
bank) Distance lends enchantment, you
know.

(The whole benk, rocks, leaves, mud,
etc., collapses on top of painting).
Alizarin: (brokenly) My masterpiece!
Mr, A. (salvaging painting from the
debris) Too bad! It will shake off
when it dries --~ I hope! I'1l be off;
I have to round up the rest of the
class, (Exit)
Turps: "I feel a strong urge to eat,
Let's go, Lizzie,

Alizarin: Yes, All we've got left to
do now is to get our things back to
school on the street car without gett-
ing paint on somebody's new spring bon-
net.

(They lesve noisily and the beach is
left as it was before the invasion of
the art students, except for bright
daubs of colour scraped not too neatly
upon the logs. The semienudists, who
seem to haunt Second Beach, if they hap
pen to choose these logs for their sun-
tanning, will get their share of local
colour).
