metal and it is almost symmetrical with a hole in one end. It may have been a piece of jewelry, strung on a cord that has now decayed, or some kind of decorative object. Because of its material, metal, and its size and shape, we are guessing that this’ is not an object of daily function but one of decorative or sacred value. We think that the other artifacts found on this site confirm this [see fig. 1]. The second artifact was most exciting. A fragment of a statue, measuring 14.5 cm in length by 4.5 cm in width, found in grid number NW 2. It appears to be a realistic sculp- ture of a-child, from which only the right arm remains. It is holding something in its hand; perhaps this is connected to rit- ual sacrifice or material wealth for the owner of the statue. The statue has been crafted with great care and skill, we are hoping to find more fragments. These will give us further insight into what the rest of the statue looked like, and what kind of func- tion it might have had [see fig.2]. The third artifact was also very exciting, and gave us a clue as to the function of this particular site. A coloured glass and metal object, measuring 7.6 cm by 3 cm, found in grid number NW 4. Coloured a vibrant shade of yellow, we think that this artifact, perhaps along with numerous other similar artifacts, was at the center of a sun or light worshipping cult or ritual practice. With further investigation, I think that we will find that the FY culture did indeed practice sun worship, expressing their need for sun in dark, rainy times {see fig. 3]. by Jim Stamper Td like to talk to you today about a sub-culture of our society that goes highly unnoticed. Even though we see these people every day and acknowledge their existence with up raised fists and shouts and curses, we don’t see them for who they really are. The group is [known as] the Dualists. This group of people is not defined by race or gender, or by age or sexual preference. The Dualists are a group of people who share the common belief in the duality of left and right. They believe that in order to keep their lives on spiritual track straight ahead they must maintain a balance between left and right. It is the constant tension between the two [opposing] forces that drives the Dualist soul. The Dualists have taken the double headed [arrow]: as their spiritual symbol. This is the artifact that I present to you today as we speak of this misun- derstood culture. : Dualism may be the oldest culture that [still] exists [today]. In this cave painting we can see what may be the first use of the symbol to represent opposite directions. The animals in this piece are clearly running in opposite directions from left to right and’ vice versa. The artists must have observed this Opposition in motion and understood it as the natural order of things. The next time we see this symbol used is in Egyptian hieroglyphics. At it’s peak, the egyptian culture supported a number of great minds/thinkers; in such an environment, it is not hard to realize the Dualists hidden in this society. were working to further their beliefs of balance. Here we sée a wall piece documenting the coming together of Upper and Lower Egypt. Lower Egypt on the left becomes associated with the left arrow, and the right arrow refers to Upper Egypt. On the far left we see where the scholar has joined the two symbols together again to express the coming together of the two king- doms. It wasn’t until the height of the Roman Empire that we see the Duality belief system manifest itself into a version that closely resembles what is being practiced today. An exam- ple of this manifestation is a set of inscriptionsthat read as an oath to the god Apollo. Apollo the sun king pulled the sun across the sky in his chariot. The Dualists took it as an affir- mation of their beliefs in right and left, it was during this peri- od in time that the Dualists took up the practice of using vehi- cles for travel. Even though there is no reference to the Dualists in the text, the Dualist symbol is clearly displayed on the bot- tom. [see fig.3]. This image is the first known documentation of a Dualist ritual. Here we see a chariot driver clearly signaling to turn right but his horses are being steered in the left direction. It is this ritual that we see being practiced today. The Dualist is he Dualist Culture ’s better to go both ways! The fourth artifact, another metal object, measuring 19.3 cm by 8.6 cm was found in grid number NW 5. It is most likely an early spade, but possibly a marker of steel associated with the sun cult. Although it has no inscriptions or engravings that we can see (but keep in mind that it has yet to be properly cleaned in the lab), the point of the object would be directed upwards if it was stuck in the ground by its nar- rower end, pointing up to the sky, possibly [towards] celestial objects. We have thoroughly searched and screened the soil for artifacts and other forms of evidence, such as seeds or bone fragments, with negative results. It is clear to us that this site was not used for ordinary, everyday living. There are no remnants of food, food preparation tools, housing, or any building at all. This lack of domestic evidence leads us to believe that this was a site of ritual. An outdoor sacred area, separated from the mundane by decoration, statues and representative artifacts of the main deity or object of worship, in this case, the sun. We believe the waterlogged nature of this site may be proof of the legendary rains that drove this culture from this area long ago. celebrating his faith by balancing the two opposing directions [see fig.4]. With the invention of the auto- mobile, and especially with the invention of turn signals, the modern Dualist had the perfect device to practice his daily worship. The Dualists believe that your life will be directed straight ahead if the opposing forces of left and right are kept in perfect balance and constant tension. Therefore they cannot help it when they see a left turn signal; they must turn right; their culture says that the two directions must be bal- anced. Under the same belief is the under- standing that if a Dualist signals one way, they must turn the other. This is the mod- ern equivalent to the ritual started in Roman times. What we consider driving infractions, the Dualists consider as daily prayer. Rituals such as the “no signal lane change” and the “no signal corner turn” have come to be a way that the Dualist can express their beliefs constantly during the day. The Dualists believe that a person, over their lifetime, will hopefully have turned as many left corners as right ones, and that this balances them for a direct path to the afterlife. With the need for better traffic control, the Dualists in the community took it as an opportunity to express their beliefs. The very clear double headed arrow has now been abstracted to incorporate other parts of a Dualists daily driving life; as we see in these next few images. The arrow is pointing west but the sign clearly says east [see fig.5]. This one is part of the newest faction in the Dualist culture. The up arrow shows the perfect balance between left and right. The truck with the green circle above the arrow reads to a Dualist as: “If you buy a big green truck you will be fur- ther down the path of enlightenment.” [See fig. 6.] This has given rise to the popularity of green sport utility vehicles. The Dualists may compromise on the colour but will still display their symbols proudly. So next time you see someone going the wrong way down a one way street, or you see someone backing up while looking straight ahead, stop and realize that maybe what you are witnessing is possibly a Dualist ritual. Then again, they just might be really bad drivers; the two are difficult to tell apart.
