12 Planet of the Arts / October 1996 STUDENT Welcome to all you new students out there, and welcome back to all of you returning students. We'd like to run this column every time the paper comes out just to keep everyone up to date on important events and deadlines that are going on through the Student Services office. A lot of this information will also be put into your student mailboxes — however, we've discovered that a lot of people DON’T READ the notices in their mailboxes. While we re on the subject of mailboxes... There will be some shuffling going on over the next few weeks, so if you go to pick up your mail one day and your box doesn’t appear to be there, don’t panic!! Look around — hey, follow the alphabet — it will probably be close by. If it is definitely nowhere to be seen then come in to Student Services and we will fix you up. Now that the add/drop period is over we will also have time to correct any spelling errors that we may have made on your name. Starting around November 1st, there will be information in your mailbox regarding Spring registration. It seems really soon | know, but we do a pre-registration for the Spring semester so that by the time you leave for Christmas you will already have your January classes in place. Spring registration works differently than the one in the Fall - the big line ups and accompanying chaos are gone — registration forms just have to be submitted to us by a certain date and we do the rest. However, and this is where READING YOUR MAIL comes in handy, that “certain date” is really important — if you miss that deadline, then you miss your place in the registration priority scheme of things. Your reg. form will be among the last ones to be processed. Not a good thing!!!! The priority numbers from the Fall are reversed in the Spring. So if you were really discouraged because you had a high number in August, never fear, you will have a way better number in December. addresses... Please, please, please — if you have changed your address since the summer or if you move during the school year let us know your new address. It’s really important that we have your correct address on file. I’m sure you re all really eager to have your grades mailed to the right place!! people... Here’s a little bit of info on our department personnel for you new students out there... Alan McMillan is the Registrar (our fearless leader!!) Lawrence Lowe is the Assistant Registrar for Records and Registration — if you had any questions about your grad requirement form or any add/drop problems, then you've probably met him already. Elizabeth Edward is the Assistant Registrar for Admissions. Sue Taylor will help you if you need copies of your transcript for any reason. Jane Robinson-Bond deals with transfer credit for the degree. Later on in the year she will be sending out information about the student exchange programme to all of the second year students. If you need general help or you're not sure who it is you need to see specifically, just ask Denise or Kajola. Financial Awards and Counselors also come under the umbrella of student services. The Awards Office recently moved and Charise Bryan can now be found in Room 132. The counselors, Lee Nicholas and D’Anne Howes book their own appointments. You can reach them on any of the red phones by dialing 3873 for Lee or 3078 for D’Anne. Questions, comments or suggestions are always welcome! SERVIC Few A mh About th Inst ords of ear rogram by Carmen Morrow During my first week of foundation, we were shown a video made by more senior emily carrers and i remembered these words of advice “...Just jump through the hoop.” Many nights later, in the dim hours of morning, hands and face covered with charcoal, I found myself ren- dering a crinkled white sheet...tonally. Ready to faint, I told myself... Through the hoop and everything’s gonna be alright. In all seriousness though, I did learn a lot from my crazy days of first year. Aside from discovering a million and one uses for those big pieces of cardboard from opus and a love/hate relationship with glue guns, I did manage to come out feeling like a survivor, initiated into... (Still trying to figure that one out.) But by far, the best thing to come out of my boot camp, oops, founda- tion experience was a bond with those in my class. Now, we can get together on pub nites and reminisce about how we weighed dragons and other joys... And I’m glad I jumped through the hoop (those of you about to now, trust me on this one.) lllustration by Isaac King What do you hope to £e OUT of the starrer wicu?
