photo by David Cooper La Traviata I write this in anticipation. It is October 22 and on the 28th I'll be going to see La Traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi, presented by the Vancouver Opera at the Queen E. Theatre. You, read this now. Now, that the Planet is published. It is probably already November. And now, it is long after my young daughter and I will have gone to our second opera together. The first was the Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote), Last fall' and she still remembers Papageno, Pamina and Tamino. She can tell you the whole story ( unaware of the satire, politics, length and expense), and she liked it. Even now, when she sings, her songs spontaneously flirt with the music from the opera to suprise and delight me. This will be different; there will be just the three of us: Alexandra, me and Verdi. La Traviata is my favorite opera; | make a point of seeing (hearing) it whenever it is preformed here, or when I go travelling. I've seen it four times (the best was in Vienna three years ago). The music is terrific. Opera is intimidating to most people. This is because they do not know anything about the Opera. People are often the most afraid of things they do not know. A. will know and not be afraid. I know she will love it and years later, I know that she will be humming along to Giuseppe (Joe Green) Verdi's wonderful music. She laughs when it is funny; she cries because it is sad. The Opera, Traviata, the music stirs the emotions and acts at a visceral level. It's adults these days that have become gloomy and blase, lost in details and intellectual defenses. Not so when Traviata was first performed. It was criticised for having an obscene plot and was censored for being too realistic a character and condition. Today we might hardly blink an eye. And many of the male patrons at the opera won't... they'll be asleep. Shhhhhhhh... Go get a dose of passion. Go listen to some good tunes. You can hear the opera on the radio or on tapes.
