This situation brings on many problems, not the least being a continual cross-reference to our expanding knowlege of history. This ensures that we have eliminated any reconizable elements of well known artists in our work, in order to retain our individ- uality as practicing atrists (in this context, it is easy to see the advent of Minimalism). With this situation, or ‘dilemma' as | prefer to call it, we come upon another choice (usually by the time we enter 3rd year). This decision, inevitably, is to escape the ''neurosis of choice", by choosing a specific path which is compatible with our person- alities and developing this new-found persona into a viable ideo- logy ('ideology', as | see it, is the process of exploring all venues which could be used as potential rébuttal to your idea, and developing a viable defence into the concept). It is my contention that this continual search for individuality and the inherent need for a directional ideology or dogma is the cause of this neurosis, for these two dominant forces in human character are diametrically opposed to each other, yet continually strive for recognition.
