On Thursday December 5, Radio Free Emily was part of the media melt- down that was Interplay, an event showcasing the work, play and neuroses of Intermedia students. Video, live electronic music, performance and the internet were all in the mix, blending into a not-quite-seamless sensory over- load. Remote control landscapes collided with guilt-ridden Zapatista wanna- bes, spinning tables met with swollen tongues. The whole thing could be heard live on RFE, complete with play-by-play from the unflappable Hank Bull. Everyone with the exception of irritated design students had a good time. The audience, having been rounded up from the cafeteria, seemed to think it was a good way to spend a lunch hour. The next RFE workshop will take place in mid-January. Our guest, Cristof Migone, will be in Vancouver for a resi- dency at the Western Front. Migone has been working with radio as an art form for a long time; his work exhibits a honed fascination with radio’s peculiarities and para- doxes. Keep your ears open for the exact day and time. Unattended Broadcast It’s happened to all of us. Two o'clock in the morning finds you at home, eating your last cookie, playing with your cat, or tramping around through the cold drizzle in some desolate part of town. Suddenly you're struck with the burning desire to transmit some- thing over the radio. A ridiculous song you've found yourself singing...maybe the ambient sound- scape of a certain spot...anyhow, we've all been there. It used to be impossible to satisfy that urge, but no longer! Radio Free Emily, via the new Unattended Broadcast System, is there for you. Developed in utmost secrecy in con- junction with Daniel Jollife and his con- nections at the MIT MediaLab, the TAD-114 Unattended Broadcast System is now ready for general use. Here’s how it works: Call the RFE number (844-3893) and, if no-one is using the station, your call will be answered by an answering machine. After the beep you will be live on the air for three minutes. Try it, and take your place in the constellation of unattended broadcast pioneers. <@s Workshops The first of the free workshop series took place on Wednesday December 4th. Montreal perfor- mance artist Catherine Kidd per- formed some pieces from her recording/book Everything | Know About Love | Learned Form Taxidermy. Kidd seems to focus on a key phrase or image, then expand outwards, drawing in associations and fragments of memory. Also in the soup are street sounds and samples culled from films. Scattered at first, over the ten to fifteen minute duration, the dis- parate elements cohere into a rich exposition. Kidd described her expe- rience of writing as a physi- cal, embodied activity: “rather than me trying to impose my will upon the page...words and paper are like clay, you can press things into them but they have their own substance, their own resilience, and they press back.” She conceives of writing as “something | do with my hands, like smoking, mas- turbation or cat's cradle...typing/tapping into some- thing like a secretarial clairvoyant.” Performing the writing is a fairly new development for Kidd, but you (on Turday December 5, Rao Free Emly was par ofthe mesa melt ton that was ntrpley on event oncaing the wer ply nd neroses intermedi students Video, ve electron mse performance andthe Incemet were lin the mia blending into a not-aute seamless sensory ove load Remote contol andaper coded with guitsiden Zapatista Wann tex spinning aber met with olen tongues Te whole thing could be pie Han Bl ead ive on RFE, complete with py by py fom the ul Eerjone with the exception of RTS ee, Windsor Plywood False Creek Store 1581 West 7th Ave. Good advice on non- traditional use of traditional materials 738-9717 December 1996 / Planet of the Arts 17 ‘A PRIMITIVE URGE IN PRIMORDIAL WATERS 0 UNITE AND FLOURISH IMAGINARY FRIEND ICE it paths to two moro BUPAALO wmaser “TEY FR rammian com 2ivergen reacting to remain risteed alive TS SRUESDAY 6:00 — 9:00) MC NIC 'JACKRABBIT' COTE making sugar for humanity's survival WEDNESDAY 12:00 - 1:3 & 6:00 - 9:01 JOHN BOY & LINCOLN VARIETY SHOW gluttonous little GIRL TALK ND NIKI ges in the It's time to dispel the shadowy veil of mystery surroundin ig Radio Free Emily. by Joshua Cohen Contrary to rumour, RFE does not operate from a refitted trawler cruising the Georgia Straight; nor does ‘it maintain a cache of automatic ‘weapons hidden somewhere in the Kootenays.
