Some of you may have asked yourself this question after seeing posters hung around the school and all over the city saying simply: ‘Push Art’’. Well, for those of you who haven’t figured it out yet, it stands for Push Art Promotional Co- operative Society, a new space esta- blished at 55A Powell Street to serve the needs of artists in this community. As a co-operative, Push Art is run totally by its members, which now total close to 50. Since our opening in October 1979, we have organized a large number of events including a benefit concert featuring local bands A.K.A., the Payolas, Modernettes, Young Canadians and U-J3RK5, two gallery shows featuring local artists, theme parties, video presentations, film nights, performances by artists, theatre workshops, and general meet- ings for the exchange of ideas. From January 16 through February 16 we are featuring the Wien-Couver Show, a mail art exchange show with Vienna, Austria. Keep your eyes open for posters announcing coming events. We have several projects still in the plan- ning stage, such as a retail store in the front of our space to sell works by local artists, and a private social club in a separate location to hold musical events and parties. We are still a young Society and we need your ideas, criticism and participation in order to realize our full potential. We have a gallery space that is totally accessible. We would like to extend an invitation for you to come down and find out what Push Art can do for you, and what you can do for us. Come to one of our meetings on Sunday evenings at 9:00 pm., drop by 55A Powell Street, or give us a call at 681-5690. We could be the alternative you’ve been looking for!
