THE ART DEPARTMENT AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY } tamow $ 2 twa There is some excellent material in the Art and Music Department of the Van- Ei couver Public Library (second floor) which would be well worth consideration by the art students, BOOKS and PLATES, covering every branch of Art will be found in that room, some of which may be taken out, others for reference only. All Art Subjects are included, Painting, Sculpturing, Commercial Art, ete., and on all of the interesting craftwork connected with these, The majority of the books contain enough pictures to keep you interested, We'll deal first with the books that can be taken home on your card. In the Naecah north-east corner of the room are a couple of tons of books dealing with Paint- 3 ing alone; History, Methods of the Masters (Old and Contemporary) Lives of the Masters, some of which are in interesting story form; Portrait, Landscape, Mural and Water-color Painting, etc, There is more here to add to your store of Imowledge than I can begin to write, so a visit is well worth your trouble. In this section, for example, are R.V.R., The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci, Noa Noa (by Gaugin, the French artist); all of these more interesting than fiction, Across the room, about the middle of the west side, is a lot of aesthetic = stuff, among which are a few good Historical Art Books, including Orpen's "Out line of Art" ( two large volumes and hundreds of pictures.) Along the north side, about centre, is the sculpturing section, Books full of reproductions; some good reading on Rodin and Epstein; History of Sculpture and a few dealing with craftsmanship, On this wall are shelves with books about Tllustration, Advertising Art, Drawing, Lettering, etc., among these is a big black one called “Color in Advertising" (full of colored pictures) and " War Posters" (more colored pictures). Nearby are scores of books on block printing, etching and other craft work, ‘s Something to interest everyone, | In briefly dealing with the reference material (which cannot he taken home j unless you would like to visit the jail and sketch the anmates) I might make a few suggestions about what might be had for the asking, Some beautiful little colored plates on Canadian Art, also some big ones ~- Canadian and otherwise; books on lives of contemporary masters including John, Orpen, Lamb; a: book of drawings by A.Y,Jackson, one of our leading landscape artists; informationabeut costumes of all periods and peoples, I would advise you not to ask for some thing like "Canadian Art" or anything covering such a large field unless you would like to have a poor obliging librarian dashing around and piling heaps of books and pictures on the table in front of you until you have enough to keep you busy for all time, It is a good idea to ask for material on one particular artist or sump'n, They usually have something to show you.
