Nikki will work in this position until November or December of this year. CMHC Update Driving on and off Granville Island became a bit more difficult with roadwork currently taking place to the entrance of the Island. This work is related to bridge safety and is being done by the City of Vancouver. We have been notified that it will likely go on through to July. In other business, the engineering report on Building 36 indicated that at least six of the trusses need replacing. The trusses take 6-8 weeks to build, and must go to a formal tender process. This means that August is the likely reopening date, although parts of the building may re-open sooner, as they become safe. CMHC is working on temporary bank machines. Sadira Rodrigues who has been working in the capacity of Interim Director, Continuing Studies, since July 2008, has agreed to retain the position on an ongoing basis. Elizabeth Edward, past Director, Continuing Studies is not expected to return in the foreseeable future and we all wish Elizabeth the best of happiness and health. Stephanie Levac has left her position as Office Assistant in Finance to work for the National Film Board of Canada as a receptionist. Paul Joseph has left his position as Librarian/Technical Services Supervisor to work for UBC. Upcoming Exhibits, Events + Lectures Congratulations Love was in the air on March 25th when Joanna Ambrosio, MAA candidate, was surprised with a visit from her boyfriend who flew in from Mexico to propose to her with a mariachi band and dancing! The street in front of Emily Carr was filled with well-wishers and the curious. Emily Carr sends congratulations and best wishes to both of them! Emily Goes Green Now that it looks like spring might have actually arrived, we have a couple of green ideas from the David Suzuki Foundation: Buy a native houseplant at your farmer’s market. Better yet, plant a native tree in your yard. Native trees provide food and shelter for indigenous insects and other animal life. These trees can even create niches for wildlife pushed out by monoculture, or single crop, commercial forests. Click here for more information. There are nearly 1,000 commercial pesticide products for sale in Canada that cannot be sold in other countries because of health and environmental concerns. Pesticides are designed to kill everything. Natural alternatives to these chemicals exist and are available at your home and garden store. You can also compost and fertilize garden beds with natural waste materials. Click here for more information.
