Planet oftheArts vol.4 no.1 SO FROM THE DESK OF ALAN BARKLEY Welcome back to another episode in the continuing saga of Life at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. For those of you returning and for those new students arriving I hope that your summer has been a productive one and I trust this year will be a good one for you. Also in the paper I’ve arranged to have a list of the new sessional faculty who will be working with you this Fall as replacement to existing faculty on leave and as additional enhancement to the courses taught by our regular faculty. As well we have hired a number of new people to replace vacancies created last year. For those concerned about the Financial Awards Officer and the Gallery position I am pleased to inform you that both positions have been filled. Ms. Siok Ang, most recently with the Student Awards section at Simon Fraser Univer- sity, has been appointed as our Financial Awards Officer and Mr. Greg Bellerby, most recently with the Contemporary Art Gallery, has been hired as our Curator of the Charles Scott Gallery and Coordinator of Public Programming. To both Siok and Greg as well as to other faculty and staff who have been hired this year I hope you will enjoy your work at the College and I know that the College community is looking forward to working with you. Shuttlebus Pilot Project In an attempt to improve communications between First and Fir and Granville Island we are looking to initiate a shuttlebus service that will require the participation of students willing to work as drivers. By the time this newspaper is printed we may have located sufficient drivers with Class 4 licences to have the van service in opera- tion. However, any students who have a Class 4 licence, or who are willing to secure one, and are interested in providing a four-hour shift that would transport students and staff back and forth be- tween our two buildings should leave their name with Doug Weir or Anita Sharpe in Facilities. If we can find sufficient drivers the plan is to run a con- tinual shuttle service between the two buildings from 8:30 til 4:30 each day to enable students at both campuses to make better use of the store, our cafeteria and other services at both buildings as Lon LLOYD GREYSUIT, EXECUTIVE OF THE YUNGLE. new fall sessional instructors Every semester the College invites sessional instructors to teach courses that augment the courses taught by regular instructors. A number of these names will be familiar to you, while others are new to the College. This is a one-year pilot project, and if we can commence the service by the end of September we will monitor the service provided at the end of the year and evaluate whether or not we should continue it in subsequent years. New Building Naturally the best solution is to bring First and Fir closer to the Granville Island campus and this year we are again submitting plans to the Ministry for approval that would enable the College to receive sufficient funding to build studio facili- ties across the street. Because of the long period of financial re- straint under which the Colleges have been operat- ing, requests for facilities from the three universi- ties and seventeen colleges has been accumulating to the point that new money that has been set aside cannot adequately cover the backlog in any given year. Nonetheless we are pressing forward with the urgency of our request and hope that we will be able to have a favorable response later this year. New Division Structure Students should generally experience the courses and programs they have been in to be unchanged but for the convenience of the staff and faculty who teach these courses we have arranged the administration of the curriculum somewhat differently this year. We now have four divisions, each headed by an Associate Dean who is a member of faculty and will be responsible for the general operation of the programs within that division. The divisions are the Studio Division (paint- ing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking) headed up by Associate Dean Terry Johnson; the Design Division (graphic design, electronic communication design, industrial design) chaired by Associate Dean Ken Hughes; the Media Division (photogra- phy, animation, film/video, interdisciplinary VINE. The Associate Deans will be reporting to a Dean who is yet to be hired. We hope to be adver- tising for such a person this year, but in the meantime I will be acting as Dean for purposes of facilitating the ongoing activities of the College and the curriculum. Program Advisory Council Another major structural change to the College is the implementation of a consultative process called the Program Advisory Council. The PAC, as it is often referred to, is a body of twenty- three individuals, chaired by the Dean with repre- sentatives of the faculty, staff, administrators and students who will make recommendations to the President and the Board on academic policy that pertains to all of the College. Reporting to the Program Advisory Council will be a number of committees that will deal with the curriculum, with student policies, with the Library and Audio-Visual Services, with Part-time Studies and the purchase of equipment for the curriculum. A number of these committees ask for student participation. I have sent a copy and arequest for participation to the Student Society. If you have an interest in one of the committees of the Program Advisory Council please contact your Student Society for a list of the available committees and a schedule when these committees meet. While not every facet of college life is covered by these committees, it is hoped that, in the main, major developments in programs and policies will be channeled through the Program Advisory Council and will provide an opportunity for the various perspectives of staff, students, faculty and administration to be brought to bear on issues and problems facing us. Again, welcome to the College and I look forward to working with you in 1988/1989.
