Well. . .this is the last Student Society Executive Report for this school year. I'll try to make it as brief as possible. You should know by now that we have had elections for next year’s Student Society Executive. Rich Neilsen is President (Czar), Richard Gordon is Vice-president, Gillian Davidson is Secretary, and Samantha Burnet is Treasurer. We all extend our congratulations to the elected. They will officially take office on September 1, 1987. During the summer, the present executive (at least yours truly) will still be available for “business”. Speaking of business, over the summer Kathryn and I will be very busy writing and collating a new constitution as well as a few legal requirements between the administration and the Student Society. We have a few students who are interested in working with us on this endeavour, as well as the Canadian Federation of Students. With this new constitution we will become incorporated with the Societies Act of Canada and we will have an “absolute” set of rules to follow in cases such as elections. Once we are incorporated our constitution will be legaliy binding. At the first general meeting of next year the students at the meeting will be able to vote on whether or not to accept the new constitution. I strongly recommend accepting a legal, incorporated constitution if we are to become an autonomous body. I also will work on a legal agreement between the administration and the Student Society, where they will only collect our fees, and any costs which occur after that will be reimbursed. Right now, the Administration just deducts money before they give it to us, for things such as photocopying, office supplies and emergencies. I believe we should have full power over all our money. We must totally separate ourselves legally from the school on these certain matters so we will gain even more authority. After all, we are a legally separate association from ECCAD and we should keep it that way. Hopefully all this work will help make the new executive’s job next year much easier. So. . .in September there will be a general meeting to accept the new constitution, pick or elect department representatives, and nominate candidates for a Foundation Representative who will act as a social activities co-ordinator. All that aside, I’d like to go over what we already have accomplished this year. The cafeteria furniture is finally all here. thanks to Mr. John Sofianos of Corfu Woodworks. The money to fund this came from the Administration and Student Society fees. The Administration, by the way, paid for about three quarters of the total bill. We still have to bring the stereo out of the office and the microwave in for student use in the cafeteria, as well as one for the painting department. Before we leave we will definitely lay the groundwork for bringing in a new food service. We gave the Vegetable Patch almost a full year to change things and there has not been any noticeable improvement. The Spring Dance. If you can measure the success of an event by how sweaty, smokey, and squished you got, then the ECCAD Spring Dance was a huge success. All the tickets were sold and we had about 500 people crammed into Dance City. Thanks for your support! Now Ill briefly list every student project we supported or created over this year: Pubnites — Fundraisers, Anti-Apartheid Group Show, United Way, Planet of the Arts, Movie Nights, Hockey Nights, Christmas Dance, Seattle- Vancouver Exchange, Cafeteria Renovation, Cafeteria Furniture, T-Shirts, Coffee Night, Video Magazine, Movement Classes, Improv Classes, Spring Dance, Printmaking 86-87 Suite, Foundation group photo, New Accounting System, Student Cafeteria Gallery, Karate Classes, T’Art Magazine. Over the past year it has been our goal to fund projects which would benefit as many ECCAD students as possible. I am confident that Kathryn, Shon, Atndrew and I accomplished all that we undertook to the best of our abilities. One of the things we set out to accomplish was a greater student unity through social events and increased communication. I believe we are better off now than we were in September. Also one of our major concerns was to rebuild your trust in the Student Society Executive and the ways of the Student Society, as well as re-establishing a firm base on which to conduct business, one that will improve greatly in the coming years. We have spent a great deal of energy trying to dig ourselves out of the financial and organizational pit that had been created over the past years. All in all I feel confident leaving Student Society business to the present elected students next September. A little advice to Rich, Richard, Gillian, and Samantha: organize yourselves from the very beginning, stand firm on all your issues, smile and get lots of exercise to relieve stress. Believe me, you'll need it. On behalf of Andrew, Kathryn, and Shon we wish you success in the future and thank you for all your support and consideration over the past year. Kathryn and I will be here at ECCAD all summer, except for July, to continue Student Society business and to work on a few ECCAD administration projects. If you have any suggestions concerning the new constitution or need any help we will be available. Thank you once again and tah-tah! I 5egan to wonder: who was this man and what was it about him that was so captivating that his students would forego those ever- precious 15 minute breaks to be in his company. My curiosity was piqued. So I asked around, found out he was Michael Ovenden and that he conducted a class called “Concepts in Space and Time”. Another one of those nebulous classes, I thought, but upon further research I found that Dr. Ovenden held a Ph.D. from the University of London and was previously a Professor of Geophysics and Astronomy at U.B.C. In addition to that he has also written numerous books and essays, ranging from “What is Life”, to “The Measurement of Stellar Parallax”, and his work has appeared in more than a hundred publications. In addition to this he was a regular on the CBC. These credentials are impressive, but not as much as the man himself. He went from U.B.C. to E.C.C.A.D., sharing with a group of art students his vast knowledge of man’s perception of the world. This was Michael Ovenden’s question. A times I’m saddened, perhaps even angry when I think that we aren’t able to finish this journey that we had embarked upon with him. In retrospect I realize that a conclusion could not have been reached, for in the spirit of a true teacher his purpose was not to provide answers, but to arouse our curiosity so that we might continue to discover. “When I consider the brief span of my life absorbed into the eternity that comes before and after — as the remembrance of a guest that tarrieth but a day — the small space that I occupy and which I see swallowed up in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I know nothing and which know nothing of me, I take fright, and am amazed to see myself here rather than there; there is no reason for me to be here rather than there, now rather than then.” Pascal, Pensees. Ovenden) # Virginia Achtem Reprinted from N.D.P News Release March 1987 Victoria — New Democrat colleges critic Darlene Marzari says college board members should be elected rather than selected by government. Marzari (MLA — Vancouver/ Point Grey) was reacting to a government plan to fire all existing college board members, and replace them with people appointed to three year terms. The members would be on probation for the first year. “While the goal of upgrading college boards is laudable, Mr. Hagen is setting about it the wrong way,” Marzari said. “Under the new system, any board member who speaks out against government funding cuts could be fired.
