OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS Dear Planet, My thanks go out to the Provin- cial Government for adding a “grand- father” clause (what about the grand- mothers?) to see the foreign students through to the end of their programmes at the same fees as before. I wish to thank those who helped us by writing letters and speaking up on a subject that was “foreign” to them. But!’mstill left with a bad taste in my mouth, (no not cafeteria food): that is, was it necessary to have put us on the edge for several valuable weeks this semester when we had better things to do? Also, I wonder why we had so little contact with the powers that be to explain the situations as they occurred. Instead we became rumour hounds feeding on every tidbit of information we got. It follows, as my introduction to the school was similar: line up, pay my fees, and do it. T hope new foreign students have better treatment. New foreign students...well that’s another question — will there be any? >~e eer ew (See ”~_<<— BTN) MESSAGES DArK Shadows: ” ward Aas hetked me out And there; jo! NO More 7cem, Apart from the fee increasing to $7,500 there is something in place now that B.C. residents have first priority, no matter the quality of the foreign stu- dents portfolio. “Oh, but a lot of other countries charge high fees,” you say. True, but why follow the pack? Emily Carr is not degree granting, and is an art school. Let’s suggest to the Board and the Provincial Government in the name of Art, Culture and Internationalism to allow two or three places each year to foreign students based on quality of work (and not on how rich one’s par- ents are) and promote this offer to other countries as an example of how Can- ada, especially B.C., views interna- tional exchange of the Arts. So don’t give up the fight, there are still some things to be fought for... Yours truly, Chris Carey (N.Z.) TOPOGRAPHICAL ERROR DEPT. Errata: Due to a typographical error in Planet of the Arts, vol. 4, no. 4, January ’89, it was mistakenly noted thatBruce DwightRivard ofthe Alumni Society was born in Calcutta, India. He was actually born in Montreal, Quebec. We apologize for any confu- sion resulting from this unfortunate error. Mr. Rivard has in fact, never even been anywhere near Calcutta, and he does too really have a degree in Philosophy/Sociology. a pw cet a see — & ‘ a eh VOL.4 NO.6 Act be. Dear Planet, Can this be the creed, the life’s breath of those who govern our art education? The purpose of art education is to nurture that side of us that is non-material, non-physical, a spiritual activity embodied and embedded in the human self, separate from but contained within it. Seonaid Robertson. Ahh, I’d like to go where art education is like this. Ricarda McDonald - SEE SPOT SMEAR DEPT, = Dear Editor, I’ve just come off two incredibly frustrating days selling our school T- shirts. All I’ve heard is bitch, bitch bitch. With good reason; the quality of the printing is pathetic enough to be the result of what one can only assume to have been strychnine poisoning. It also didn’t cross the less than powerful brains of the two people responsible for printing to warn us that the design must be ironed before being washed, otherwise a muddy mess results. Well, here’s hoping that they enjoy reading this letter as much as I enjoyed selling their shitty product. XOXOXO Karen Opas FLOODED DEPARTMENT DEPT. Dear Editor, Back in January, (the weekend after Doug Weir was fired, in fact), there was a flood in the printmaking department. A pipe burst in a heat exchanger upstairs in the print storage area, endangering finished prints and unused paper that about 70 printmak- ing students keep there. Fortunately, there were some students in the litho area who noticed the plumb- ing failure as soon as it occurred. Several people (Howard Sempf, Kat Ortner, Senta Tsuchiya, and MediaTA Richard Bidwell), scurried around to get the water shut off. Then, since it was after 1:00 am and the cleaning staff had gone home, Howard and Kat stayed until 3:00 am cleaning up the mess, mopping up the floor and checking each drawer for any leakage. On behalf of the Printmakers in the College, I would like to thank all involved for their quick action and dedication which saved us all from losing six month’s work to water damage.
