Happy November folks! Just another month
to X-Mas Holidays. So what is this Student
Society of yours doing?

First of all, we’ve been looking into getting a
student photocopier to be placed somewhere
strategically so that it is accessible to all students
at all times. The machine we’re looking into is
made by Canon and has countless features (half-
tones, zoom to 800%, reduction to 35%, negative
images, duplication of one image, mirroring,
stretching, condensing...to name a few). The
Society is currently looking into the logistics of the
whole thing and we hope to see it sometime early
next term. The charge per copy will be in between
15¢ to 25¢ (this thing is expensive) but we're pretty
convinced that it will be well worth it.

Plans are under way for the X-mas dance.
Any volunteers (huh? what’s that?!?) and sugges-
tions are most welcome. Look for related propa-
ganda in early December (or late November for that
matter).

GENERAL MEETING TIME! Time to get
together and see what we (the students) are doing,
what E.C.C.A.D. is doing and how life is in general.
Wednesday, November 16th, 12:30 in the
Faculty Lounge.

And...for those of you writing out proposals
for $$$$, please, oh please, spend some time and
think about how the proposal helps out the student
body. Makes life easier for all of us.

A Board Meeting

This is a report on the meeting of the Board of
Directors of the Emily Carr College of Art and
Design that occurred on October 26, 1988 (Meeting
#112). :

I and several fellow students observed the
College Directors going through their paces. An
honourary diploma was presented by Ken Hughes
to one of his old teachers, Walter Jungkind. Board
Chair, Pat Bovey, conducted the meeting briskly.

Alan Barkley, the College President, reported
on a number of matters. First he spoke about the
College being a member of a new association
associating the four Art Colleges in Canada. This
is beneficial for a number of reasons, not least of
which is the channel of communication that it
opens between the Federal government and the
Colleges.

Mr. Barkley also spoke about a thing called
“The Access Committee Report”, a report by one
Robert Henderson who apparently spent the past
spring and summer evaluating access to higher
education. This is the latest forum to address the
question of granting ECCAD graduates a Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree. Mr. Henderson, though
impressed by our program, declined to give us
independent degree granting status. All is not lost
however, for he did recommend that ECCAD
graduates be eligible for degrees from the Open
Learning Agency (whatever that is) upon comple-
tion of extra academic courses. Mr. Henderson
also, bless his little heart, recommended that the
College have a long term budget assuring the
College of long term receipt of funds, so that
important things don’t have to be financed as “tem-
porary expenses”. At present, the provincial
government keeps the College on a short leash.
Many expenditures must be approved on a yearly
basis. (See John Love’s DATAism column for an
example of what this can do to us.) I could imagine
our Bursar, Brad Campbell, licking his lips in an-
ticipation of the proposed change.

Speaking of Mr. Campbell, he too spoke to the
Board for a while. He reported the sad state of
affairs in which the Provincial government is
pursuing a more restrictive definition of FTE’s. I
was perplexed: what were FTE’s (and why are they
now unrestricted)? It slowly became evident that an
FTE represents the amount of money the Province
grants the College for each properly registered full
time student (a Full Time Equivalent). Foreign
students are not going to be worth any FTE’s. How
many part time students make up an FTE and
under what circumstances? Considering that each
FTE is worth about $6250 (full time tuition paying
students must bring in about $7300 a year to the
College) these are not small potatoes.

The College desperately wants more students
to attend the Board Meetings. I can see why.
Board Meetings could provide a convenient channel
of communication to students and a chance for little
ceremonies as well.

As a student though, I can see little reason to
attend. Why should I be interested in being an
audience for the little bits of information the Board
sees fit to reveal to the public? As a reporter, that’s
reason enough for me to attend, to carry the infor-
mation to the rest of you. For the Board to be a
forum of any real interest to students, however, I
think there need to be at least several students
sitting on the board as voting members, able to
receive all of the information that board members

‘ get, and to attend not only the public meetings, but

the business meetings of the Board as well.

This is linked, of course, to the general need
for many students to come forward and become
actively involved in the administrative structure of
the College.

Still, come check out the next Board meeting
on November 23.

YEAR OF THE POWER GRAD

While graduation seems a distant possibility
at present, the Class of 89 has already begun
organizing itself as a group. To date there have
been two meetings of the Graduation Steering
Committee (comprised of seven staff, four faculty,
and four student representatives), and two meet-
ings of all the grads. Approximately 75% of the 130
prospective grads attended each student meeting.

At the most recent of these meetings (Nov.3),
chaired by Rick Robinson and Rick Ross, the main
topics under discussion were the grad ceremony
(location and style), a catalogue (funding and
production), and the Grad Show (opening and
duration).

May 6, 1989 is the date set for both the
graduation exercises and the opening of the grad
show. Several students who had witnessed last
year’s ceremonies felt the event had been staid and
overly formal, and therefore encouraged ’89 grads
to be more active in the shaping of this year’s
exercises. The Vancouver Playhouse, site of the ’88
ceremony, was deemed inadequate for a variety of
reasons, despite it’s comfortable 750 seat capacity.
The main flaw with this venue is that it operates
primarily as a theatre, necessitating the clearing of
the building well before the regular matinee
performance. Last year this meant a 10:00 a.m.
ceremony, leaving embarrassingly over-dressed
grads wandering around downtown mid-day, with
nearly eight hours to fill before the opening. The
matinee factor is also prohibitive to the setting up
or staging of any events or artistic ambience which

of, say, a college of chartered accountants. A
committee to locate a more appropriate venue was
formed (Les Barth, Allison Bigg, Susan Leinbach,
Naomi Singer and Cyndi Wright.)

Naturally the choice of location will influence
the character of the ceremony and determine the
level of student participation possible, so not much
could be decided re: decorations, performances, etc.
It was decided that during the grad exercises diplo-
mas would be presented within departments rather
than by assembly-line alphabetical order.

Specific to this year’s formalities will be the
inclusion of a student speaker on the official
agenda. This speaker will be decided by nomina-
tion and balloting. Grads Kurt Robertson and
Shawn Gleason, having missed the meeting to
attend to Student Society business in Ottawa, were
volunteered in absentia to handle the election
procedures. Nominations will not be held until the
Media department returns from China in mid
November.

As to the catalogue, preliminary research
indicated that 15,000 copies of a 64-page catalogue
(2 grads per page), 8 X 10 format with full-colour
printing, would cost approximately $11,000.00. It
was suggested that funding could come from a
variety of sources, such as Student Society, the sale
of catalogues (presumably to everyone’s relatives),
and especially from corporate and business spon-
sorship. (Jim Pattison, if you’re reading this...)

The format and layout of the catalogue have
yet to be determined. Ideally a graphic design grad

would take this on as a project and work in collabo-
ration with a representative advisory board of other
fourth year students. The committee to work out
these details consists of Martin Hunt, Adam
Lossing, Lynda Nakashima, Michelle Perugini,
Naomi Singer, and Ian Verchere.

In the past, confusion and undue resentment
have arisen from the preliminary opening held by
Graphic Design. Ken Hughes explained the
importance of such an occasion as it is an opportu-
nity for the business sector to informally meet
grads and view their work before the ravages of
time, moisture, heat, and the fingerprints of an
inquisitive public have taken their toll. Since the
majority of students felt that one grad show
opening for the entire college was the most desir-
able situation, it was suggested that Graphic
Design hold their event under a new title and well
in advance of the May 6 opening. The solution has
many advantages and was agreeable to all present
(well, almost), and details will be worked out by
Ken and the twenty G.D. grads.

Traditionally the grad show has run for four
weeks (May 6-June 6) but there is a possibility that
this year’s one week will be sacrificed to facilitate
the hiring of security guards to allow the college
buildings to remain open later in the evening.

Overall the suggestions for change have been
met with encouraging optimism from the Admini-
stration (in the person of Tom Kowall), with the
promise of strong student awareness and participa-
tion.
