The English Teacher og Us After the holidays... Dec.23rd. A Japanese holiday. A stand-by booking on Air Canada. (I'm going home). A two week visit. Vancouver, people, parties, a love affair ... Three hours of sleep. Packing. Just before | leave my apartment, a broken camera. A short train ride, from Nakayama to Machida. A two hour bus ride to Narita airport without a camera. @ Narita. Bad news. Air Canada to Toronto is cancelled. Everyone is piling onto the Vancouver flight. Standing. Waiting. Praying. (please, please). Finally, a cancellation. Thirty minutes to take off. Running through the airport. The first crowded gate at depar- tures. Running. Twenty minutes to spare. Another long line at customs. (I'm not going to make it - there's no way). A rep from Air Canada comes out- "anyone else for Vancouver, there's no time, please come up to the front." Shuttle to the jet. Inside the plane with few heartbeats to spare. Doors close. Eight hour flight. Shanghai Noon & XMen. EAST tbeds by TJ Anzai \ Vancouver. It's all the same but it's not. It's nice but I'm sad. Six months have passed. It's overwhelming. It's too much, but it's nothing at all. Vancouver, beautiful but troubled. Rain. T-shirts in January. The school - ECIAD, still there. New faces. It goes on... | have to leave. | have to go back. Another life. Goodbye again. Arrive again. It's different now. | am not the same. | know this place. A picture from the past finds home in a wallet. Moving along. Jan 20. A fellow grad arrives. A familiar face. Receding desperation. We talk. We laugh. The last time | saw him was a house party after grad. Here we are now.
