eccadstudentunion SX By Irwin Oostindie A total of 318 students completed the Spring '93 ballots the first week of January classes, marking it as a very successful program. As a non-binding referendum on 37 issues, it will provide elected Student Union Executive Commit- tee member with a mandate to do work for the Spring semester. This is a phenomenally high rate of participation for any college or university student union. Unfortu- nately the timing was poor to reach part-time students, we did reach approx. 45% of full-timers. This is a result of a number of factors: esuccessful plan of using healthy food as an incentive *dissatisfaction among the membership, & an idea that this was an attempt to democratize the organisation, and empower the individual students - feeling that they could participate. ethis is a small college, and this illustrated how effectively we can communicate with our member- ship - if we so choose to eby having controversial issues included in the ballot, this motivates interest groups within the school (in this case Foundation students, choir, etc...) to urge students to participate. Despite the length of the ballot, and the very brief backgrounds to each question, when you look down the long list of numbers, one can see students showed suprising clarity and knowledge of the issues, and took the time to read each ques- tion. The Student Union Executive is now in a position to make certain deci- sions concerning creating or termi- nating services. The story to the right contains the percentage points calculated for each question asked. Special thanks to Jeremy and Nancy, as well as other members of the Executive who volunteered their time.
