C.K., maybe I’m being just a bit over dramatic, but so is the Rever- end Horton Heat. This was my fourth time seeing the Reverend and company, and each time | have been impressed with the variety of the crowd at the shows, from the rockabilly with big hair and sidebums from here to eternity, to the suburban college type with his Chip and Pepper shirt. | guess this goes to show that the Reverend is doing his best to break down barriers that so many people get hung up on...but when the band starts, who really cares? The crowd was a bit slow at first (with the exception of the three guys trying to mosh behind me), but when the Rev. started into their rockabilly selection of the night with numbers like “Bad Reputation”, things started to roll. By the time they were on Various Wade Free Vancouver (The Club Grotesque Compilation) Independent to some of the faster, more. intense songs such as “Four Hundred Bucks” and “Wiggle Stick”, there was no holding back the crowd's enthusiasm, not to mention the “fine Cana- dian whiskey” that the Reverend, Jimbo, and Taz seemed to give left, right and centre. There was a very insistful woman beside me wanting to hear “Eat Steak”, and lo and behold, ask and you shall be given. All in all , their onstage personality is as cool as their show; a pretty big step for a band that is a leading interest in this new type of rockabilly, let alone representing a whole new sound for the altemative scene. Ah hell, they made me dance and rock out. What more can be said?
