38 Planet of the Arts / December 1996 ...continued from page 16 Of all the times | got off the subway to walk to my pad at some outrageous hour that would horrify my mum, often the follow- ing would happen: a man would approach me and tell me how unsafe my pratice was and proceed to lecture me all the way home, he watching from a respectful dis- tance to see that | got in safely. Then there were the two times when loaded down with bags, and guy would come along and help me carry them home, all the time warning me not to trust people who want to help me carry stuff ‘cause they'll bolt with it. | was beginning to think that this was the safest neighbourhood | ever lived in, except for the nuts that think it’s dangerous. | just heard one of our number got mugged yesterday, fifty feet outside of the school gates. They flattened his face for him, took his watch, three bucks from his pants pocket, and his duffle bag with notes and books. This on a sunny afternoon at two. | forgot to mention something in my last correspondance that | must. | want to tip my cap to the dream team of Blaine and Bidwell. Booking at A/V here gives the feeling of writing your request on a slip of paper and releasing it into the wind. You can only reserve things for two certain days of the week, and when you do reserve, they look at your request and say, ‘What do you want this for?’: not out of interest, but more they’re furiously thinking, ‘Is there any way we can talk this person out of making more work for us? Hmmm, she wants a bolex. Maybe we can persuade her to build one out of cardboard and wire instead’. It's a confusing process made worse by the fact that the unlikely lot of students working there have no knowledge themselves of the system or equipment. And because it’s a bad system, the people, of course, are tense, and not at their most charming. Lots of things in the video editing depot aren’t set up at present; staff are not precisely keen to do the job. We can’t do fades and when we said we wanted to, the guy in charge went into a shpiel about how, aesthetically, fades do nothing to improve a piece. Then there’s the shopping. No lovely editing packages put togeth- er by Richard, no film for sale on campus. I’m not really complaining — twist my arm to go to Manhattan to buy supplies! But it is awfully convenient to have that stuff right there if you need it. Nothing I’ve kvetched about is a serious impediment. But when you know people that do it right, you've got to send kudos.
