42 planet of the arts / december 1997 THE INSTITUTE Rape Relief Recognition Dear Planet of the Arts, As a volunteer for Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, I was pleased to find Rebecca Christofferson’s article, A Place For Healing in the October 1997 issue of PoA. Over the past few months my work there has taught me invaluable lessons about myself, my sisters and the socio-political dynamics of sexist violence against women. This violence is a more common experience between women than childbirth. Virtually EVERY woman I know can recall some incident(s) in her past or knows someone who has been raped, battered, sexually assaulted, verbally abused or harassed. Women are not safe in the streets — day or night, and since the overwhelming majority of attacks are from men they know, we are especially not safe in our own homes or among our male acquaintances. This is the EVERYDAY REALITY women live with. Considering the pervasiveness of violence against women and the state’s failure to respond to this crisis adequately, VRRWS is an extremely valuable asset to the community of women. Working there as an activist is empowering and as an artist poignantly inspiring. —Jennifer Moreau Electronic Transcript from PEI Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 23:06:23 +0100 To: jlander@eciad.bc.ca From: tdawes@isn.net (Terry Dawes) Subject: poa Hi Jonathan / Planet of the Arts, Thanks, thanks, and thanks. Blessings on your house. The new Planet arrived. My lord, you sure do manage to drum up lots of material for the Planet. I actually spent time reading it. Imagine that! And it was good! Wow! I must however single out Harald’s piece about Sir Lucky and crew as being a well written comedic gem. I laughed and laughed, not at Lucky’s misfortune but at his wit. The part about mistaking art for garbage provoked howls of laughter ... and it’s so true! That’s so Andy Warhol! Once again, Harald is the MAN. He’s the MAN. The photograph that accompanied that article is mindblowing as are most of the photographs — although I’m not sure I was entirely prepared for the full page spread of Lawrence Lowe... it’s a good thing I wasn’t sipping hot coffee when I turned to that page. Sounds like things are pretty good at ECIAD these days. It’s neat and somehow weird to read up on it since I quite literally feel like I’m living on another planet now and that whole time (no exaggeration) seems like some kind of crazy dream. I must say I’m happy to not have to experience those bizarre, spiteful politics. It seems from the paper however that things on the whole are looking up. Anyway, take care and thanks again. —Terry Dawes, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Expressions of Admiration Date: Thu, 30 Oct 1997 17:53:09 -0800 (PST) From: Cal Sawyer To: poa@eciad.bc.ca Subject:.PoA! It only took me 39 years. Next year I graduate and it'll be 40 years. For me, I don’t know how I’m going to top this year. I know it’s not much to most people about birthdays, but it felt very welcoming and I’m grateful for the time and energy everybody put together for the day.
