HELPFUL TIPS FOR STUDENTS FROM THE 93-94 WEBCON, CFS STUDENT HANDBOOK Success What is success in school and how can you achieve it? Let’s start by defining success. Does it mean having a 95% average? No, although that would be nice, especially at scholarship time. Success is a feeling of satisfaction that you experience after achieving a goal and as you work towards a goal. Most people are happy and satisfied after finishing the school year and getting good marks in their courses but successful people have a feeling of ongoing satisfaction as they work towards their goals. If you don’t have frequent (or seemingly constant) feelings of success, you will have a much greater struggle trying to reach your goals. As well, once you reach your goal, you won’t have a great feeling of accomplishment but rather only a feeling that the struggle is over, without a feeling of real enjoyment. This is what real success is all about. Now, the next question is how to achieve success in school? Everyone has a certian amount of natural talent for different tasks. Unfortu- nately, natural talent usually won’t get you everything you want. Fortunately, we all have an enormous amount of potential. To use our great potential we have to be clever. You shouldn’t concern yourself with how smart or intelligent you may be. Your I.Q. may be 175 or 75. Who cares? You can do anything you want to do if you are clever enough. Being clever-‘means using all resources that are available to you in the most effective and efficient way possible. In school this means finding ways to motivate yourself, save time, and get higher marks on assignments and tests. Think about-yourself as being a clever person who looks for better methods of doing things. Consider yourself a successful person and try to enjoy each day leading up to the achievement of your goals. Goals Goals are your launchpad to success. Every week you should think about what you want out of life and what you want to accomplish. As students we have a lot of options ahead of us and we need goals to direct our thoughts and actions. After thinking about what you want from life you can start creating long-term goals for yourself. Even though you will alter your goals as time goes on it is better to have some goals than none at all. Almost everyone will have the goal of finishing their degree. This goal alone will not ensure success. You need to create an image of what you will have when you school, even if you are now unsure of what you want in life. Imagine yourself at a job you enjoy, living somewhere you want to live and being with people you want to be with. Make these images as clear as possible in your mind. Think often about how great your life can be when you graduate or achieve a similar goal. When you have a few long-term goals then you think of,a. master plan you will use to get your goals. From your plan you should set shogt:term goals v which” will help you measure your progress towards your long-term goal.” These short- | term goals may be things like achieving good marks in each of your courses or making it on to one of the school teams or earning enough money during the summer to help pay for the next year of school. Each of these goals may not have as glamorous outcomes after completing them as your long-term goals. These short-term goals just get you to the next step. Because there is not as much incentive to complete these tasks you must always remind yourself that these tasks, that you may not enjoy doing some- times, are necessary in order to achieve your long-term goals which will give you great rewards. Remember that the purpose of school is to achieve your goals so always remind yourself of the rewards when the going gets tough. When you have strong goals you have concrete motivation to help you make better decisions. Studying Studying is obviously an important part of success in school. There are too many good methods to cover on this page but I will give you a few ideas to keep in mind that you can use for your own benefit. When you take a break from studying plan the break so that you leave your work at the most interesting part so that you will be less hesitant to return to studying. Study in the area you are most familar with. If you’ve always studied in the library then continue to do so since the familiar surroundings won’t be a distraction. If you are used to studying in your own room then even your cluttered room will probably be less distracting than the library setting. The same general rule applies to studying while listening to music. If you have done it for a while then it won’t seem distracting but if you are used to silence then don’t bother starting now to study with music. Copyright 1989 by Tom Nash, reprinted by permission.
