A Change of Heart A Call to All Nosebleeders by Alyssa Hutsul Bored with February being dedicated to the cele- bration of love and those who claim to be in it? Tired of try- ing to avoid all of Cupids low flying arrows? Disgusted with the commercial pressures thrown at you from all directions after just recovering from the Christmas season propaganda? We, a small but eager group of Anti - Valentiners share these and numerous other similar concerns. But what very much separates our activists form the average “Down on Love/Morrisey Fan Club” members is that while we disap- prove of this synthetic and materialistic love-a-thon, we equal- ly honor and pay tribute to those who suffer from the trials of nose- bleeds - yes, nosebleeds. It is our belief that victims of nosebleeds do not receive sufficient recognition or sympathy. In an attempt to kill two stones with one bird we have proposed to substitute what is currently known as St. Valentine’s Day with National Nosebleed Awareness Day. Cadillac (the artist), chairperson of the Students’ Union at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and president/founder of the Nosebleed Society sent out a press release to shed some light on the intentions of the pro- posed nosebleed recognition campaign and the holiday switch. The release states that Valentine’s Day is simply the most appropriate time of year for nosebleed awareness as it falls within a typically dry season poignated with varying tem- perature patterns. Such environmental conditions influence bodily systems to prompt nosebleeds and significantly raise the daily percentage of bleeders. It is also mentioned that the transition would be made smooth by the continued use of the symbolic colour red, in addition to maintaining an association with hearts, via blood. Cadillac is also currently consulting with members of the Sire Records PR team to see if a deal can be made involving the musical group My Bloody Valentine to tour in support of the cause. We’re still trying to figure out exactly what we’re going to do as a camera club, so we’re encour- aging people to come to our meetings to help shape the club’s future. We're thinking about bringing in both models and guest speakers, developing portfolios, visiting shows, trying to get bulk prices on film and paper and learning from other students and staff about colour photography, digital applications, or anything else people are interested in doing. It’s also a chance to get feedback about your pictures from your peers and to talk about photography outside of the classroom. Sound interesting?
