VOL.4 NO.6 1989 =~ While not actually an alumni nor an instructor at the College, George (better known as Sammy Sammy) had a good deal of influence on many students. A musician, a storyteller and genuine folk artist, Sammy’s life took on legendary propor- tions. Frequent pilgrimages to Place du Bois, his Hornby Island “estate”, were made by groups of 3-D students and curious individuals who had heard rumours of Sammy’s Spook Show and the sprawling yard filled with mysterious signs and rustic cement and wood sculptures. Sammy welcomed one and all into his home, eager to share the story of how he met the beautiful red-haired Anastasia over 60 years ago on astarlit prairie night, and how, with a single kiss and a lock of her long red hair, they pledged their eternal love. As fate would have it though, Anastasia disappeared mysteri- ously, and though the young cowboy searched faithfully for years, he never saw her again. Thus was born Sammy’s insa- tiable love of red-haired women. Sammy’s art and stories were the subject of a 1988 video by students Kim Blaine and Lynda Nakashima. His accomplish- ments were eclectic and endless; he will be missed but never forgotten. 4 by NAOMI SINGER = ie an > Q a > z i me + eek Oak ae ° geen h® weetTS YY oe naw nee ee ae < = RS NAOMI SINGER Secs Rn \ George A. de Pape (1908-1988) Sammy Sammy While not actually an alumni nor an instructor at the College, George (better known as Sammy Sammy) had a good {eal of influence on many students.
