Brad Campbell, our former V.P. Finance-cum-Acting President appointed himself project manager of the biggest construction job at Emily Carr since Alan’s parkade was built. Work began in June and was scheduled for completion by the end of August. $400,000 of government- allocated capital funding was spent on upgrading parts of the administration offices and areas in the Media Division. Brad’s project involved integrating the previously disjointed full- and part-time student services offices, and bringing together the deans into a domain they could call their own. Executive Committee: When I registered for summer school this year, I was surprised at having to pay $6/class for Students’ Union dues. The presence of any Students’ Union was almost nil during the summer months I attended at ECIAD. The Students’ Union room, which was accessible to students all year long, was locked most of the time, with only a select few indi- viduals having the the combina- tion to the door lock. Who were these people and why did they have the combo? Isn’t this room for all students to use? What exactly does the Students’ Union offer ECIAD students in the summer anyway? The computer, phone and couch was my main interest, but why was Life Drawing cancelled as well? What will the Students’ Union offer students next summer? Less fees? More programs and services? Summer semester at ECIAD is an important part of my education process. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS. Can I have my $12.00 back? Denise A. Walls were torn down in the Animation area to give students more studio space and to allow air conditioning in the camera room. The construction of a mezzanine created more storage space in the Film/Video area. The tell-tale signs of construction taking place abounded throughout the summer months. Construction beams, drywall panels, electrical cable and displaced ~ equipment were strewn throughout rooms and hallways in the Institute. Warnings were issued for power outages, but not for the frequent fire alarms that were impossible to ignore. Concentration was lost while the sound of jack hammers reverberated throughout the North Building. Burly construction workers | were everywhere. And through it all, Brad scurried about — drawings in hand and determination on his face — resolving as best he could the latest complaint, deficiency or fiasco. According to one PoA source, who wishes to remain anonymous, renovations in the Media Division attained 90% of specified goals. The unattained 10% consists of contractors’ blunders that weren’t properly addressed, such as not insulating the sound room, and providing insufficient electrical power to the camera room. ‘ Determining the scope of renovations to be carried out was a decision that had been assigned to the staff and faculty of the Media Division. Students were not included in this process. According to our source, the response of most Animation students to the renovations is generally positive. While the increased number of students enrolled in Animation are making great use of the spatial improvements (and new digital video editing workstations), Film/Video students have not benefited anywhere near to the same degree from the mezzanine that was built to redistribute storage space for them. PoA’s anonymous source tells us that the Film/Video Department needs new [digital] sound and editing equipment, not space renovations. One of the best results achieved through the Media Division renovations may be a feeling of consolidation and progress. It looks very profes- sional except for the stamp cross- ing out Jonathan Lander’s name on the inside cover. It seems petty to bring Students’ Union executive politics into the production of an otherwise fine piece of work. Somebody has too much time on their hands. Galin Akin Animation To all Emily Carr Students, First of all I would like to thank you all for have given me the opportunity to be a part of a Students’ Union executive in the capacity of Film/Video represen- tative this summer. It’s been a busy summer, and now that is all over for me, because I will not seek re-election in the following term. I would like also to stress the importance of Students’ Union as one of the only democratic bodies for us (the students) at our insti- tute. Everyone should vote and take part in the issues that are being dis- This Year’s Ef cussed (school hours, user fees, quality of education, tuition...) but make sure that personal differences or intrigues be excluded from exec- utive issues, like the mysterious dis- appearance of the student handbooks, which was done without the notification of S.U. executive, nor voting on a motion to do so. It was simply an individ- ual act and things like these will separate us, make us ' week, and undermine our purpose and goals. They are only blemishes on a very active and productive term. Now good luck to you all and I will leave you with a phrase passed on to me by my fellow artists: ARS LONGA, VITA BREVIS (Art is long, life is short).
